WOCANDSEABED2030LAUNCHPARTNERSHIPFORGLOBALOCEANBATHYMETRICMAPPING WorldOceanCounciltoEngageOceanBusinessCommunityinContributingBathymetricDatatoSeabed2030forSustainableDevelopment22May2019TheNipponFoundation-GEBCOSeabed2030ProjectandtheWorldOceanCouncil(WOC),theGlobalBlueEconomyBusinessOrganization,haveforgedapartnershiptoadvancemappingtheworld’soceanfloor.WOCwillengagetheoceanbusinesscommunitytopromotetheSeabed2030visionandthewaysinwhichorganizationsinthemaritimecommunitycancollectandcontributebathymetricdatatoSeabed2030.CompaniesinterestedinparticipatinginprovidingseabeddataareencouragedtocontacttheWOCatinfo@oceancouncil.org.TheagreementbetweentheorganizationswassignedinCopenhagenon14MaybyDrGrahamAllen,ActingDirectorofSeabed2030,andPaulHolthus,WOCFoundingPresidentandCEO,onthefringesofthe1stGlobalPlanningMeetingoftheUnitedNationsDecadeofOceanScienceforSustainableDevelopment.Tomarkthesigningoftheagreement,itwasannouncedthatSeabed2030willtakepartintheWOC7thannualSustainableOceanSummit(SOS),Paris,20-22November2019,andwillcollaboratewithWOCtoconductanSOSworkshopforindustryonbathymetricdatacollectionandsharing.“Collaborationacrosscontinentsanddifferentsectorsofthemaritimecommunityisabsolutelyessentialtoourgoalofproducingadefinitive,publiclyavailablemapoftheworld’soceanfloor,”saidDrGrahamAllen,ActingDirectorofTheNipponFoundation-GEBCOSeabed2030Project.“ThispartnershipwiththeWorldOceanCouncilwillhelpusengagetheoceanbusinesscommunityinpursuitofthisgoal.Therolethattheycanplaycontributingorcollectingdatawillhelpadvanceourunderstandingoftheocean,andofhowwecanactsustainablyandresponsiblyinthefuture.”Speakingafterthesigning,WOCCEOPaulHolthussaid,“TheWorldOceanCouncilistheuniqueinternationalcross-sectoralbusinessleadershipallianceforoceansustainabledevelopment,scienceandstewardship.TheMOUwithSeabed2030strengthensoureffortsto

encourageoceanindustriestocontributebathymetricdata,whichweareadvancingaspartofthebroaderWOCSMARTOcean–SMARTIndustriesprogram,whichengagesthefullrangeofoceanbusinesssectorstoparticipateindatacollectionandsharing.”TheNipponFoundation-GEBCOSeabed2030Project,launchedbyMrYoheiSasakawaofTheNipponFoundationattheUNOceanConferencein2017,isacollaborativeprojecttomaptheentiretyoftheworld’soceanfloorbytheyear2030,andtoincludeallbathymetricdatainthefreelyavailableGEBCOOceanMap.Inpursuitofthisgoal,Seabed2030isbuildingaglobalcommunityofoceanmappers,hydrographers,scientists,industryandthepublictodiscoverandpublishallexistingbathymetricdata.Seabed2030alsoaimstoinformandinspirenewmappingexpeditionsto“mapthegaps”inourknowledgeoftheseafloor,andprovidetheworldwiththedefinitivemapofoceanbathymetry.
