An increasing degree of concentration... with still space for SMEs

A significant international dimension

A growing domestic market, with some serious problems:

. insufficient reading habits

. insufficient library funding

. massive unathorised photocopying

1. Introduction – Copyright law in Spain (I)

A general principle:

reproduction of a work requires the previous authorisation of the author

Different exceptions and limitations to that principle:

. among them, private copying

1. Introduction – Copyright law in Spain (and II)

Individual management of copyright

eg.: the publication of a book:

author / publisher

Collective management of copyright:

. eg: massive photocopying:

authors-publishers / CMS / users

2. CEDRO: general presentation (I)

CEDRO:

Centro Español de Derechos Reprográficos

2. CEDRO: general presentation (II)

CEDRO: a non-profit association of authors and publishers of books, periodicals and other publications [www.cedro.org]

CEDRO acts as a collective management society, specifically a Reproduction Rights Organisation

Member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) [www.ifrro.org]

2. CEDRO: general presentation (III)

CEDRO represents:

. 7.771 Spanish authors and publishers, members of CEDRO

. thousands of foreign authors and publishers represented by 22 similar organisations in other countries

2. CEDRO: general presentation (and IV)

CEDROs main functions are:

. distribution of royalties to rightsholders

. social function: training, promotion and assistance services to authors and publishers

. copyright education and enforcement

. defence of the interests of authors and publishers

3. How CEDRO supports publishing SMEs (I)

The best ally in defence of publishers (and authors) interests

In search of a more respectful environment

. eg: CEDRO’s lobbying for a better IP law and a comprehensive Anti-Piracy Plan in Spain

. eg: CEDRO’s project for a Copyright Education Programme

3. How CEDRO supports publishing SMEs (II)

A more secure main market

An expanding secondary market

. eg: CEDRO’s actions against illegal photocopying

. eg: revenue from CEDRO’s licences authorising photocopying/scanning of pages of books, periodicals, etc.

3. How CEDRO supports publishing SMEs (and III)

Promotion, assistance and training services (“social function”):

. legal and tax consultancy services

. training programs, workshops and seminars

. promotion in different business arenas

. specialized studies, newsletters, websites...
