A warm welcome to the winter study school! Please take note that the winter school is
held at the Quest Conference Centre in Vanderbijlpark. Once again, we have prepared a
stimulating programme for the week ahead, and hope that you will find it most rewarding
and complementary in pursuit of management excellence. Please take note that
attendance of the study school in totality is compulsory, and attendance lists must
be completed. The study school consists of five academic building blocks. These blocks
are:

Company projects for the final-year students.
The NWU School for Business & Governance hosts a prestige day on Wednesday and
has once again secured top-notch speakers from industry. Please come and learn from
these gurus on a variety of topics on management and leadership practices in the
changing business environment. These speakers are:

The NWU School for Business & Governance has also invited some guest lecturers to the
study school who are willing to share their knowledge. These lectures are module specific
and comprise a number of concepts aimed at providing advanced managerial
development to not only survive in the business jungle, but to excel within the dynamic
environment of management, leadership and business. These concepts include personal
development, practical business challenges, research, skills, and also direct MBA module
tuition to enable a balanced growth in your personal and professional careers.
Regarding the class venues, please remember that the welcoming session and opening
address will be a combined session for all students in Voyager 1. For class-specific
sessions, please consult the timetable. Also note that early morning coffee, tea and
lunches will be served at the venues as per timetable.

Dr Johann I de Jager
Involved in Intergroup Relations Research Project (HSRC); Specialist responsible for the Absa Visual Corporate Identity
Johann de Jager started his career as an Afrikaans journalist (Hoofstad in Pretoria) in
1968, became sub-editor in 1969, and then the editor of a house journal (Sasol News).
In January 1973, he was appointed to lecture Practical journalism in the Department of
Perswetenskap (Journalism) at the then PU for CHE. He lectured for 12 years while
completing his BA honours, MA and DPhil degrees, was associate professor and head of
the department of Communications for four years and then went back to Communication
practice, in January 1985 because ‘he by then became a handbook-lecturer’.
During his absence from the academic world of 29+ years, he was, from 1985, involved in
the publicity for the Intergroup Relations Research Project of the Human Sciences
Research Council (HSRC) in Pretoria, designated head of Public Relations at Vleissentraal
and head of image advertising and later the change of the visual corporate identity of
Volkskas to Volkskas Bank in 1988, a project with a budget of R24 million.
From June 1991, he was responsible for:
The management of the two- and three-dimensional visual identities of Allied Bank,
TrustBank, United Bank, Volkskas Bank and Bankfin until October 1997 when the
five mainframe databases were finally consolidated, and
The development, implementation (October 1998) and management of the various
Absa Group and Bank two- and three-dimensional visual corporate identities from
November 1997 as Senior Consultant: Corporate Identity until retirement in
December 2008, as well as the Barclays Bank endorsement of the Absa visual
identities from 2005.

The largest project he was responsible for – the projected/envisioned Barclays South
Africa – had a projected cost of R1.52 billion.
As the responsible specialist for the Absa Visual Corporate Identity he was responsible for
the acceptance and the engagement of the staff of approximately 34 000 members of the
new Absa visual system, as the commitment and dedication of the staff are crucial for the
positive establishment of the new identity.
He was the co-developer of the staff engagement course, I am Absa, and I am the brand,
which was used from 1999 to 2002. The workshops started with contact staff and were
concluded with a presentation to the Absa Group’s board of directors.
He retired from the Absa Group in December 2008 and started lecturing in Corporate
communications on the Mafikeng Campus of the North-West University on 1 June 2009
where he supervised three successful PhDs in three years. At the NWU Mafikeng he was
acting director of Human Sciences for 15 months.
He retired from the NWU on 31 December 2013.
He still supervises post-graduate students at the NWU, Mafikeng Campus, and the
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and was external examiner for MA and PhD
candidates at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and University of Pretoria (UP).
He has a DPhil in Communications and also holds a BA honours degrees in Journalism
(Perswetenskap) from the then PU for CHE, Psychology from UP and Translation and
Interpreting from UJ.

Dr John L Purchase
CEO of Agbiz
Dr John Purchase is currently CEO of the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz) of South
Africa, having been appointed to the position in 2007. Prior to taking up the position with
Agbiz, he was the CEO of Grain South Africa. Dr Purchase started his professional career
as a scientist in South Africa’s Agricultural Research Council (ARC). In effect, he served
the ARC for 22 years in various research and managerial positions.
Dr Purchase was appointed to the board of the Land & Agricultural Bank of South Africa in
July 2012 and served a three-year term until July 2015. He was also appointed as council
member to the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) and currently still serves in
this capacity. From 2012 to 2015, Dr Purchase served as the chairman of the CEO Forum,
a forum of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).

Ms Mmabatho Mfikwe
Chief director: Corporate Services in the Department of Public Works, Roads and
Transport
Nyakallo Mmabatho Gugulethu Mfikwe studied BA in Journalism at the Rhodes University
and completed it in 1991. After that, she continued her studies at UNISA and completed a
BA honours in Communication in 2000. Key components included, among others,
Intercultural and development communication and Organisational communication and
Public relations. She did an MBA at the North-West University in 2015. She specialised in
Human resource management. Other courses and certificates obtained are Public Sector
Development and Management (UNW 1999), Development Management and Facilitation
Programme (Wits P&DM 1997), Basic Principles of Public Relations Practice (PRISA
1993), Public Relations Practice (PRISA 1994), Strategic Management Tools (USAID
1994) and Facilitation Skills (Centre for Managed Change 1996).
From 1994 to 1996 she held the position of senior administration officer and
communications officer at the office of the first North West Province Director General. In
March 1996, she was appointed in the Department of the Premier as assistant director
(Strategic management unit). From September 1998 to December 2000, Ms Mfikwe
served as Deputy director: Communication and Transformation at the Public Safety
Secretariat. She was employed by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism
as Director (administrative secretary/chief of staff) in January 2001. In August, the
Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety appointed Ms Mfikwe as Chief
Director: Corporate Services. From May 2009 to date, she has served as Chief Director:
Corporate Services in the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.
Mmabatho speaks six languages, namely English, Setswana, Sesotho, isiXhosa, isiZulu
and Afrikaans.

Ms Nicole Marriott
Sales consultant for McGraw-Hill Education
Nicole was born in Sasolburg in the Free State, but grew up in Vanderbijlpark. She
attended Pinedene Primary and then Suncrest High School. Nicole matriculated in 1993.
Her first job after high school was working for a stockbroker doing mostly administrative
work. She worked in various positions as the years progressed, while she decided what
she really wanted to focus her career on.
In the interim, she had a daughter, who is now almost 18 years old.
In 2000, she took a position in the operations department, and stayed on for 11 years,
while also studying supply chain management part-time through correspondence.
Currently, she works as a sales consultant for McGraw-Hill Education in the higher
education division and has been with McGraw-Hill for just over three years. Her territory
includes Johannesburg, Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom and Namibia.

Prof Theuns Pelser
Dean and head of school for the Graduate School of Business and Leadership – UKZN
Professor Theuns Pelser was appointed at UKZN as from 1 April 2015 as the dean and
head of school for the Graduate School of Business and Leadership. Prior to his
appointment he was the director of the Graduate School of Business and Government
Leadership, North-West University, South Africa.
Before that he was the Head of Regenesys Business School (RBS) and strategy manager
at Sasol.
He holds a PhD in Strategic management from the Potchefstroom University, which he
obtained in 2001.
He currently is a visiting professor at Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business
(Namibia University of Science and Technology) and HELBUS Helsinki School of Business
(Finland).
His academic interest is strategic management, within the context of international
technology and innovation management. Prof Theuns has published 51 academic peer-
reviewed papers in the last five years and supervised 16 postgraduate dissertations/theses
to date.

Mr Johan Els
Managing director of Sparrow Consulting; Founder and chairperson of the University of Africa and Central African Correspondence College in Lusaka, Zambia
Johannes Leon Els completed his BEng (Chemical Engineering) at the University of
Pretoria in 1981 and the MBA at the North-West University in 1997.
His career history started in May 1981 as a senior process engineer at Sasol/Natref. In
June 1986, he became the strategy manager and after that filled various other
management positions in the technical, commercial and project departments at Middelburg
Steel and Alloys/Columbus Stainless/BHP Billiton. In November 1999, he was appointed
as managing director at Heinz H Pariser International Metals and Minerals Research
(Germany). From September 2003, he was the managing director of Sparrow
Consulting/Pebble Publishing. He is also the founder and chairperson of the University of
Africa and Central African Correspondence College in Lusaka, Zambia.
Highlights of his career entail the following:
He travelled extensively, primarily to Europe and the USA, between 1992 and 2003.
Between 1992 and 1999 he was responsible for facilitating the establishment of nine major
foreign manufacturing companies in South Africa. Between 2000 and 2003, he conducted
industrial research and undertook various international assignments in the metals and
minerals industry from his base in Germany.
In the establishment of Sparrow Consulting and Pebble Publishing, he took a shoestring
company from concept to national leader in the writing and publishing of textbooks. To
date, Pebble Publishing has written and published some 150 textbooks for the South
African tertiary education market.
He established the University of Africa in September 2010 in Lusaka, Zambia. At present,
the University offers 12 graduate and post-graduate programmes and has 3 500 students.

It has graduated close to 1 000 students to date (4 PhDs) and includes three cabinet
ministers completing their studies at the University in 2014 and 2015.
He designed and implemented a totally innovative university operating model for the
University of Africa. This includes flexible enrolment and examination systems, fee
structure, material development methodology, as well as logistics and information
technology support systems.
Throughout his career, and in many different workplace environments, he made it his
mission to optimise workplace efficiency. This was achieved primarily by addressing
structures and systems, technology utilisation and staff motivation.
Sparrow Consulting is involved in establishing systems and technical shop floor
procedures and instructions to assist and train operational staff and supervisors to improve
workplace efficiency.
A lifelong passion for education has led to the establishment of several businesses having
a training and education focus. This includes the successful establishment and operation
of Sparrow Consulting (educational consulting), Sparrow Publishing (textbook publishing),
University of Africa (Zambia), Central African Correspondence College (Zambia) and Ubi
Academy (RSA, awaiting CHE accreditation).
He is the chairperson, a non-executive director and member of the convocation of the
University of Africa based in Zambia, which currently offers 16 degree courses on a
distance learning basis.
He also acts as guest lecturer for different manufacturing, project management and
supervision courses on an ad-hoc basis. He manages several projects aimed at the
training of TVET College lecturers and examiners.
He has been a regular speaker and panel member at international metals and minerals
conferences on both academic and industrial research topics. These days, he is a regular
contributor to the annual SAQA conference addressing various education topics.
He started developing university and college textbooks in 2009 with more than 150 having
been published by Pebble Publishing to date. He has also written many technical
qualifications for different SETAs and the DHET as well as literally hundreds of training
modules since 2004.

Mr Pieter Geldenhuys
Futurist, academic and innovation expert
Pieter Geldenhuys is a renowned futurist, academic and innovation expert. He has
a degree in Electronic Engineering, and an MBA specialising in Technology
Strategy. He is adjunct faculty at the North-West University and Cornell University,
Ithaca, New York. He was a technology strategy advisor to the CEO of Vodacom
between 2005 and 2011, and the previous vice-chair of the Innovation Focus Group
at the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland.
He is the founder and director of the Institute for Technology Strategy and
Innovation, aligned with North-West University. As academic, he was honoured in
2014 with a nomination to the prestigious South African Academy of Science and
Arts.
As public speaker, he has more than 800 radio and more than 1 000 public
appearances under his belt, and has spoken to audiences in more than 20
countries.
He believes the only way to effectively predict the future, is to create it.

Theunis Meyer
Senior subject specialist
Employed as senior subject specialist, Theunis Christoffel Meyer holds two master’s
degrees and an honours degree in Environmental sciences and management, is a
registered professional natural scientist, registered ISO 14001 lead auditor, and
experienced environmental impact assessment practitioner. He is involved in consultation
projects covering a wide spectrum of environmental and environmental-legal challenges
and in the development and delivery of SHE short training courses.
Prior to joining the CEM, he worked as nature conservation and agricultural scientist in
Namibia, the Karoo and the North West Province, where he was involved with research on
vegetation dynamics, plant-animal interactions, invader plant control and veld
rehabilitation.
During his career, he has delivered numerous papers at national and international
conferences and is regularly invited to lecture at various tertiary training institutions. He
has also published a number of scientific and semi-scientific publications, as well as
numerous popular publications.

Dr Cobus Pienaar
Managing director: Arbinger Institute in South Africa
Dr Cobus Pienaar was born and raised in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He graduated from
the University of the Free State in 1994 and completed his postgraduate studies in 2005,
obtaining all his degrees with distinction. He is registered as an organisational psychologist
with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, and has been appointed as senior
psychologist and organisational development consultant for a number of organisations.
From 2002 to 2015, Dr Pienaar was employed as senior lecturer in the Department of
Industrial Psychology at the University of the Free State. He also chaired that department
from 2007 to 2010. He still conducts research on topics related to leadership, careers and
dysfunctional leadership and organisations, and has published in peer-reviewed academic
journals such as the South African Journal of Education, Acta Academica, South African
Journal of Psychology, Tydskrif vir Geesteswetenskappe, South African Journal of
Business Management, Southern African Business Review and South African Journal of
Industrial Psychology.
In addition, Dr Pienaar has read scientific papers at various international conferences such
as Advances in Management, the International Congress on Leadership in Post-school
Education, IPED Conference, the International Conference in Contemporary Business,
and the 6th European Conference on Leadership, Management and Governance. He is
often approached to review academic articles for scientific peer-reviewed journals.
Dr Pienaar has been representing the Arbinger Institute in South Africa as managing
director since 2008. The Institute is a world-renowned management consulting and training
firm and scholarly consortium that specialises in changing mindset. Cobus is leading the
delivery of Arbinger’s programmes and consulting services in South Africa and is often
consulted by companies in the private and public sector, focusing on the development of
leaders, teams and organisations.

Mr Shawn Liebenberg
Statistical consultant at the North-West University, Statistical Consultation Services (SCS), Potchefstroom Campus
Mr Shawn Liebenberg studied at the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus.
He completed his BSc honours degree in Statistics in 2011 and his MSc in Statistics
with distinction in 2014. His areas of focus are the advanced probability theory and
nonparametric regression methods.
Since then, he has been a statistical consultant at the North-West University, Statistical
Consultation Services (SCS), Potchefstroom Campus. His role as a consultant for the
SCS entails:
Conducting client interviews, constructing questionnaires, researching statistical
techniques, processing and analysing data, interpreting and explaining the results
obtained and presenting short courses on statistical theory and statistical software.
His programming skills include SAS, SPSS, R, Fortran, Photoshop, Latex, Statistica
and Microsoft Office.

Mr Theo Venter
Political and policy specialist at the NWU School of Business and Governance; Special
advisor to the Vice-chancellor of the North-West University
Theo Venter is a political and policy specialist at the NWU School of Business and
Governance and special advisor to the Vice-chancellor of the North-West University on a
part-time basis. In this capacity, he advises on politics and strategy. He is also a political
commentator on South African politics in the media, especially on radio and TV. He has
been part of the SABC election teams in all elections since 1987. He consults regularly in
the business and agricultural sectors on the state of politics in South Africa and has been
member of the BMI Strategic Forum since 1990 with a focus on the building industry. He
was appointed in May 2015 as chairman of the Governance and Risk Management
Committee of the NW Department of Rural, Environmental and Agricultural Development.
He teaches a course in the formulation of strategy at the Post-Graduate Diploma
programme of the Business School. His main research interests are scenario
methodology, political change and policy development.
Theo Venter was born on 27 November 1955 in Modjadjiskloof (former Duiwelskloof),
Limpopo. He grew up in Vanderbijlpark and matriculated in 1973 from the Transvalia High
School. He then studied at the Potchefstroom University and obtained a master’s degree
in Political science in 1982. From September 1982 to January 1984, he studied in the USA
as a Fulbright Scholar at the Nelson Rockefeller School for Public Management at State
University of New York in Albany, NY obtaining a second master’s degree in Comparative
politics. Theo Venter has received acknowledgement as one of the most quoted staff
members at the NWU for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Theo Venter is an outdoors person who loves nature, photography and wildlife and he is
actively involved in the organised hunting fraternity. He is married to Thildé and they have
four children.

Prof Waldo Krugell
Director of the School of Economics at the North-West University
Prof Waldo Krugell is the director of the School of Economics at the North-West
University’s Potchefstroom Campus.
He holds a PhD on the topic of the economic geography of South Africa. His current
research focuses on development issues from a micro-economic perspective. He is also
part of the NWU’s Policy Uncertainty Index team.
