WIN DATE WITH PIRELLI

HARD TO GET: Model Lily Cole poses with a sloth for the 2010 Pirelli calendar

By KARLA PINCOTT

THREE of Australia’s most beautiful

women provide the heart of this

year’s Pirelli Calendar.

The world’s most exclusive calendar,

which cannot be bought and is always

given away by the Italian tyre company, is

in its 37th edition for next year.

The calendar images were revealed

this week in London and copies should

arrive in Australia before Christmas.

The Australian stars of Pirelli 2010 are

catwalk and

m a g a z i n e

s u p e r s t a r s

Miranda Kerr,

C a t h e r i n e

McNei l and

A b b y L e e

Kershaw, who

are among 11

models who were photographed for this

year’s edition.

The others are Eniko Mihalik from

Hungary, Marloes Horst of the Nether-

lands, Lily Cole, Daisy Lowe, and Rosie

Huntington-Whiteley from the UK,

Georgina Stojilijkovic of Serbia and two

Brazilians — Gracie Carvalho and Ana

Beatriz Barros.

The images for the 37th edition of the

calendar were shot earlier this year by

Terry Richardson on locationin Brazil. He

is an outrageous American fashion

photographer whose images are often

sexually provocative and can border on

the overly graphic.

But the calendar in its finished version

is probably more startling for its contrast

to previous years than anything else.

Following on from the lush and exotic

Botswana landscape and fauna in which

Peter Beard set the models for last year’s

Pirelli calendar and the opulent

chinoiserie costumes and backdrops

used by Patrick Demarchelier in 2008,

Richardsons’

shots are starkly

simple.

He’s returned

to a classic Pop

Art-era, pin-up

calendar style,

with little in the

way of back-

drops, props, make-up or costume, for

that matter.

‘‘A great photographer, captures the

moment that’s why I shoot without extra

equipment and without assistants,’’ Rich-

ardson said.

‘‘My technique is the absence of

technique: the lens is my eye, my

charisma, my ability to capture moments

of truth, whatever they may be, picture

angles, use of colour, light, scenery these

have always been the essential aspects

of my photographic art.’’
