Arnold & Carol WienkIn May of 1958, Arnold purchased his first
Charolais bull from Litton Charolais inMissouri. A few weeks later he married,Carol Casper on June 1, 1958.
She likes to tease, “He got two good thingsthat year and he still has them both!”
Today, Wienk Charolais is a multi-familyoperation. For more than fifty years, theWienk’s have supported and promoted theCharolais breed in South Dakota, across theUnited States, and internationally. In recogni-tion of years of service, they received awardstoo numerous to count. In 2009, they wereinducted into the American InternationalCharolais Association (AICA) Hall of Fame.
Jeff & Jody Eschenbaum & FamilyJeff and Jody Eschenbaum became partners
in Wienk Charolais in 1985. Jeff grew up inMiller, South Dakota where his family ran 500commercial cows. Using an extensive AI pro-gram, Jeff bred-up that herd into a reputationpurebred Gelbvieh herd, Double E Gelbvieh. He married Jody Wienk in 1983. Jody grew up
at Wienk Charolais and she hassupported the Charolais breedher entire life. With Jeff's loveof cattle and the ranching wayof life he joined Jody and herfamily at Wienk Charolais. Jeffand Jody have four sons whoare active in the operation:Sterling, Ty, Calder and Stetson.
Jeff and Jody stay busy running the ranchand keeping up with their growing family;they just became grandparents in August of2013. They are active members of the AICAand involved in the community. Jeff servedon the school board for many years and thewhole family is active in their church, LakePreston Lutheran. The Eschenbaum’s werevoted South Dakota Charolais Family of theYear in 2005.
Sterling & Courtney Eschenbaum In 2010, Jeff and Jody’s oldest son
Sterling and his wife Courtney becamepartners at Wienk Charolais. Courtney is a2007 SDSU graduate and currently works

Dear Charolais Friends,We would like to invite you to our 46th Annual Bull Sale on April 25th. We
find ourselves yet again in unprecedented times. Our ever-changing world, markets, and consumers demand that all of us in the beef industry continue topush forward and adapt to produce more beef, more efficiently, and with fewerresources. We gladly accept the challenge and will continue to embrace tech-nology, integrate better management practices, and work with you, our indus-try partners, to provide quality genetics that will increase your bottom line. Thisis our family’s passion and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.
This year we will be offering a top cut of 116 yearling bulls out of 175+ onperformance test. We encourage you to review the numbers, study the provenpedigrees, watch the videos, and stop in anytime to evaluate the cattle in per-son. As always, we encourage you to evaluate our entire program; we are muchprouder of the program and traditions that develop these bulls than we are ofany one bull as an individual. We would like to thank all of the buyers & friends for the support for TheLegacy Sale we hosted last fall. As Arnold & Carol look to slow down, we sold140 of our mature cows to 16 states & Canada. As a testament to the programthat Arnold & Carol have built, that sale was the largest US Charolais femalesale in recent history and averaged almost $5,300. We have always said thatour greatest asset is our cowherd because great bulls come from great females.A sale feature will be the sons and grandsons of those cows. We will be keeping 1/3 interest in all of the bulls. This is simply so that wecan collect semen on a bull at our expense and at your convenience if we sochoose for AI use within our herd. The bulls have been fertility tested and scro-tal measured and will be measured again sale week. Again this year, all thebulls have been tested for bvd-pi; they are all negative and cannot be sheddingthe virus.
Please visit our website for updated information including pictures, videos, and sale information. Again this year we will have online viewing and biddingthrough DV Auction. If you are unable to attend the sale and leave a confiden-tial bid with Jeff, Sterling, or any of the sale representatives, we always guaran-tee your satisfaction when the cattle arrive or you don’t own them.
We welcome you to the ranch to be our guest on April 25th, lunch starts at11:30AM with the sale getting underway at 1:00 PM. Please don’t hesitate to callus at any time if you would like to discuss the offering or have any questions.
Thank you for considering Wienk Charolais Genetics, we appreciate theopportunity to earn your business.
Sincerely,Arnold and Carol Wienk Jeff, Jody, Ty, Calder and Stetson EschenbaumSterling and Courtney and Ryker Eschenbaum
GENETICSWe strongly believe that genetics are an investment. Genetics, from your cowherd and your choice of bulls, are what setthe ceiling on the potential of your calf crop. Proper management, nutrition, and healthy calves will help your operation reachtoward that genetic ceiling, but never past it. Genetics set the playing field and are the first step to profit. We follow this phi-losophy with our herd and strive to present genetics that will continue to raise the bar on your genetic ceiling.
PHENOTYPEWCR bulls are bred to travel ground and breed cows problem-free. Traits that cannot be quantified such as feet & legs, muscle shape & dimension, and disposition are of the up most importance in our program. Visitors are always welcome atour place to evaluate our cattle in person. Below is a chart of the average actual information on the bulls in this sale: sinceonly 70% of the bulls on test make the sale, we are truly offering a top cut of prospects for your review.
GENOTYPEBalanced cattle that continue to push the Charolais breed forward is the goal of our program. Some numbers to consider:
GENOMICSWe continue to monitor the advances in technology thatwill be of benefit for our program and our customers.Genomics research and application is changing con-stantly. The American-International CharolaisAssociation has recently developed Genomic EnhancedEPDs (GE-EPDs). We have been involved with thisprocess and made sure that all of our bloodlines andherd sires were included into the training population.
Furthermore, we have been in involved with the USDA Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) as the further researchthe use of genomics within the beef industry:
“Wienk Charolais is one of the early pioneers in how beef cattle genomics maybe used on farms and ranches in the future.
Wienk Charolais’s valuable contributions to building this knowledge started in 2009 with involvement of the Weight Trait
Project (WTP). At the invitation of the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium (NBCEC), twenty-four seedstock producers
from the midwest representing seven breeds were selected to demonstrat the use of parentage testing, aid in the evaluation of
technological advancements and procedures, validate heifer reproductive discoveries, and contribute to the growing knowl-
edge of how to incorporate Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs) into National Cattle Evaluations. The latter result in genom-
ically enhanced EPDs on traits of economic importance.
Their continuing participation in the WTP has allowed the Wienks to progeny test sires in the the USDA National
Program for Genetic Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle. Cows are calving the second group of calves sired by
Wienk bulls at USMARC this spring and the first group of calves (fall born) are weaned and about to go on feed in the
USMARC individual feed intake facility. The goal of the project is to identify the genetic markers associated with feed intake
across multiple breeds. Furthermore, the Wienk’s have continually submitted cow inventory, breeding, and calving records on
their 2009 born heifers so the project can look at relationships between feed efficiency and cow reproductive performance.”

NUTRITION & FEED EFFICIENCYWe see our bulls as athletes and feed them accordingly. Working closely with our herd nutritionist, we have developed atotal mixed ration consisting of corn silage, alfalfa/ grass hay, grain, and supplements that the bulls have been feed sinceweaning during the middle of September. This low grain – high roughage intake promotes lean muscle growth withoutleading the bulls to fall apart down the road.
Please note that the “gains” is this catalog are calculated on the entire 177 days that the bulls were on test. This set ofbull gained 3.4 lbs/day, on average, on the TMR listed above. We believe that 5lb+ gains and yearling bulls weighing 1600-1800 lbs just doesn’t make sense. Our performance test is designed to demonstrate their genetic differences whilepreparing them for the task that lies ahead: getting your cows bred. Keep in mind also that these bulls all earned theirnumbers from the very same feed bunk: no feed pans and no extra help.
CARCASS TRAITSIn the Spring 2014 AICA Sire Summary, there are 10 bulls listed as Trait Leaders for each of the 4 identified carcass traits. Thechart below shows how many of those Trait Leaders are strictly either WCR Bulls or sons of WCR Bulls. These bloodlines thatcontinue to dominate these carcass charts are deeply rooted in our herd: Duke 261, Impressive D040, Prime Cut, Prime Time, and Tradition 066. We have ultra-sounded our sale bulls and provided that information to our customers since 1988.

WCR BULL SELECTORThis innovative database tool on ourwebsite allows you to search for agiven bull or sort the sale bulls bysire group, birthdate, or by ranking oftheir performance numbers orEPDs. This spreadsheet is integrat-ed into our website for simple, one-click operation without ever havingto open another page or leave ourwebsite.
ADDED VALUEOur customers are capitalizing onthe pounds and premiums thatCharolais cross calves bring to thetable. Over the years we have devel-oped relationships with feeders andorder buyers that have seen success with our genetics. They like their dispositions and have come to rely on their consistentgrowth and carcass quality to make a profit. Nothing makes us happier than to see our customers leverage the reputation ofour program, but promoting that their calves are sired by “Wienk Bulls.”

using ePDs for selection-Published by the american-international Charolais association
Cattle Evaluations use the term Expected Progeny Differences(EPD) to express genetic transmitting ability of a sire for the var-ious traits listed. An EPD is a prediction of how future progeny ofa sire are expected to perform in a particular trait relative to othersires in the analysis. The key word is “difference”. The EPD itselfdoes not imply “good” or “bad” performance. But rather, the EPDgives a prediction of the average difference to expect in the per-formance of a sire’s progeny relative to other sires in the sameanalysis.
The EPD for a given trait on each animal in the analysis is com-pared to every other animal in the analysis. The EPD is reportedas a plus or minus value in the unit which the trait is measured.
Each EPD reported is accompanied with an Accuracy (ACC) value.ACC is a measure of reliability regarding the EPD evaluation fora performance trait. Accuracy is reported as a decimal numberbetween zero and one: large values indicate greater accuracy andmore certainty the EPD will show little change as additional prog-eny information is obtained.
Birth Weight ePD (BW The expected difference in average birthweight (pounds) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth.
Weaning Weight ePD (WW) The expected difference in aver-age weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genet-ic influence on pre-weaning growth rate.
Yearling Weight ePD (YW) The expected difference in averageyearling weight of progeny. The evaluation reflects genetic influ-ence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate.
Maternal Milk ePD (Milk) The genetic ability of a sire’s ordam’s daughters to express in pounds of weaning weight in hercalves due to her maternal ability through mothering instinct andmilk.
Total Maternal ePD (TM) A value to predict the weaning weightperformance of calves from a animal’s daughters due to geneticsfor growth and maternal ability. Total Maternal is calculated byadding ½ the WWT EPD to the Maternal Milk EPD.
scrotal Circumference ePD (sC) The expected difference inscrotal circumference (expressed in centimeters) of a bull’s ordam’s male offspring at yearling compared to progeny of all otheranimals evaluated. Research has also indicated a relationshipbetween increased SC EPD and decreased age at puberty for daugh-ters.
Carcass ePDsCarcass records are adjusted to an age constant endpoint. Thereforeselection based on any or all of the carcass merit EPD are compa-rable among cattle at the same age endpoint. For example selectionbased on increased EPD for carcass weight will result in heaviercarcass weights than those animals with lower EPD for carcassweights when the cattle are harvested at the same age.
Carcass Weight ePD (CW) Expected progeny differences for Car-cass Weight is a predictor of pounds of retail product at a constantage endpoint. Selection for increased values should result in heav-ier carcasses, while selection for decreased values should result inlighter carcass weights at the same age endpoint. Carcass WeightEPD are expressed in pounds and is a predictor of the differences inhot carcass weight between parents progeny at an age constant end-point.
ribeye area ePD (rea) Ribeye area is measured from a cross-sec-tional area of the longissimus dorsi muscle at the 12th rib. Ribeyearea is a major component of the USDA yield grade equation andselection for increased ribeye area should result in larger ribeyesand lower yield grades between animals with the same carcassweight. Ribeye area has a positive relationship with weight, thelarger the animal the larger the ribeye area. Ribeye Area EPD areexpressed in square inches and is a predictor of differences in rib-eye area between parents progeny at a constant age endpoint.
fat Thickness ePD (faT) Fat thickness is measured at the 12th riband is the primary component to the USDA Yield Grade equation.Fat thickness has a negative relationship to cutability; therefore, selection base on decreased fat thickness should result in lower yieldgrades and leaner cattle given the same age endpoint. Fat Thick-ness EPD are expressed in inches and are a predictor of differencesin fat thickness between parent’s progeny at an age constant endpoint.
Marbling score (MarB) Marbling is a subjective measure of theamount of intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Marbling score isthe primary component of USDA Quality grade and selection forincreased Marbling Score EPD should result in cattle with higherquality grades at the same age endpoints. Marbling score has a smallgenetic correlation with fat, therefore producers may select forincreased marbling score EPD while not changing external fat thick-ness when cattle are harvested at the same age-constant endpoint.Marbling EPD is a prediction of the differences in the USDA sub-jective marbling score between parent’s progeny at an age constantendpoint. Marbling is expressed in the same units as the USDAMarbling Score (see table below), see the accompanying table forUSDA Marbling Score in the Carcass Section.
