Universal Design

Provides a starting point for developing a framework for instruction

Help toward the not-so “average” student› Blindness, hearing

impairments, low vision, learning disabilities, mobility impairments, those that do not use English as first language.

Universal Design For Learning Main Purpose: make sure each student

is a successful learner, “expert learner” Key: design learning experiences to

make sure each student learns› Flexible with choices and paths

Four Components:› Goals for the classroom› Materials in the classroom› Methods› Assessment

UD For Learning Cont’d Three Principles:

› Provide multiple means of representations Make sure each student understands

› Provide multiple means of action/expression Students express what they know

› Provide multiple means of engagement Motivate and engage students in classroom

Examples Interaction

› Teacher/student communication› Put students in groups to find similarities

Physical environments and products› Make sure activities, facilities, materials are

physically accessible for all Feedback

› Always give feedback for papers, projects, etc. Information, resources, and technology

› Ensure that materials and notes are accessible and flexible.
