Where I Could Be…

Circulatory System

Circulatory System

• Transportation system• Transports oxygen and nutrients to

body cells• Carries carbon dioxide and

metabolic materials away• Consists of heart, blood vessels,

and blood

The Heart

• It’s “ The Pump ”• A Hollow Organ• Located Between Lungs

– behind sternum– above diaphragm

• Septum– muscular wall separating heart into

right and left sides

Three Layers of Tissue

• Endocardium– smooth, inside lining– allows for the smooth flow of blood

• Myocardium– middle, muscular layer – thickest layer

• Pericardium– double layered membrane sac– covers outside of heart

Four Chambers of the Heart

• Right Atrium (BLUE)• Right Ventricle (BLUE)/destination

lungs• Left Atrium (RED)• Left Ventricle (RED)/destination

body cells

Valves(doors with one-way

openings)• Tricuspid valve• Pulmonary valve• Mitral Valve (Bicuspid)• Aortic Valve

Heartbeat Cycle(Process of filling &

emptying)• Diastole (heart relaxation)• Systole (heart contraction)• Atria contract• Atria relax• Systole begins• Ventricles contract

“The Plumbing”

• Aorta supplies arteries that oxygenate the walls of the heart with O2

• Coronary Arteries• Heart Attack occurs when these

vessels are blocked.

Conductive Pathway• Sinoatrial node (SA)/pacemaker• Atrioventricular node (AV)/relay

station• Bundle of His/(R) & (L) Bundle

Branches• Purkinje Fibers/generates

contraction of ventricles

Blood Vessels

• Arteries (away from heart)– Aorta– Arterioles

• Capillaries• Veins (toward heart)

– Venules– Superior Vena Cava– Inferior Vena cava

Blood Composition

• 4-6 Quarts of Blood (average adult)• Plasma (90% water)• Cells

– Erythrocytes– Leukocytes– Thrombocytes

• Donate Blood!!!

Diseases

• Anemia– Iron deficiency– Aplastic – Pernicious– Sickle Cell

Diseases

• Aneurysm• Arteriosclerosis• Atherosclerosis• Congestive Heart Failure• Embolus• Hemophilia• Leukemia

Diseases

• Myocardial infarction• Phlebitis• Varicose veins
