Protect yourself and your family with a working Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm

MYTH: Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed next to my furnace.

FACT: Carbon monoxide alarms must be placed beside ALL sleeping areas in your home.

MYTH: My carbon monoxide alarm should be installed lower on the wall because carbon monoxide is heavier than air .

FACT: Carbon Monoxide is actually slightly lighter than air, but diuses evenly, so it doesn’t matter what HEIGHT the alarm is placed.

MYTH: You should only call 9-1-1 if your carbon monoxide alarm keeps alarming after you've opened the windows and doors.

FACT: If the alarm is sounding, get out of the house. Do not open any windows, close the door behind you and call 9-1-1. Stay out of your home until you are told you can re-enter.

MYTH: It's ok to use a barbecue or warm a vehicle in a garage as long as the garage door is open.

FACT: There's always the risk that carbon monoxide will leak into the house, even if the garage door is open.

MYTH: There are no physical symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

FACT: The early physical symptoms of carbon monoxide are similar to the flu: nausea, headache, burning eyes, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. The key dierence is that there is NO fever with CO poisoning. The symptoms tend to disappear when a person gets fresh air. These are all warning signs.
