What tools do we use in studying the Universe?

Presentation by: Martin Benjamin V. Torres

Optical Telescopes• 1608, credited to Hans Lippershey,

German-Dutch spectacle maker• Isaac Newton first practical

telescope• Galileo first used for astronomy• astronomical telescope gathers and

records light• records mainly visible part of

electromagnetic spectrum• images magnified for proper viewing• mirrors act as lens

Parts of a telescope

• objective lens– collects lots of light from a

distant object and brings that light to a point or focus

• eyepiece/focus lens– takes the bright light

from the focus and magnifies it

Communication satellites

• Communication satellites allow radio, television, and telephone Transmissions to be sent live anywhere in the world.

• Communication satellites are often in geostationary orbit

Other examples of telescopes…• radio telescope

– operates on radio frequency– detects radio emission

• Infrared – uses infrared light to detect cosmic bodies– infrared radiation is heat

Electromagnetic Spectrum

• range of all possible frequencies electromagnetic radiation

• radiation- energy that travels through vacuum and matter

Satellites

• a satellite is an artificial object which has been intentionally placed into orbit

• it is mainly use for communication

Astronomy satellites

• an Astronomy satellite is basically a very big telescope

• Astronomy satellites, therefore, can see into space ten times better than a telescope

Landers

• A lander is a spacecraft which descends toward and comes to rest on the surface of an astronomical body

• The landing occurs after atmospheric entry and the lander is first a re-entry vehicle

Star maps

• The star map was produced by the Star Maps on demand service of Mount Wilson Observatory

• Another source of star maps is the Starry night program for windows and Macintosh computers

• A star map is a map of the night sky

Spacecraft

• A space craft is a vehicle, vessel or machine to fly in outer space

• Spacecraft are used for communicating, earth observation, meteorology and transportation
