Heart Healthy Awareness Month by Amy St. Onge, Health Coordinator/RN
New Year’s resolutions made just a month ago may be phasing out by now if you are anything like many of us who are eager at the first of the year to start making positive changes in their lifestyle. As we mark National Heart Health Awareness Month in February, it may be a good plan to stick to those New Year goals for the pure benefit
of your heart health. The American lifestyle has changed greatly since the Colonial times where men and women both worked physically hard to build their own homes and communities. Food was hunted, gathered, processed and cooked all by hand. There was no convenience of the grocery store or neighborhood restaurant for certain.Today we rely heavily on convenience in all areas of our lifestyles. Over half of our population is overweight and these numbers are growing.Obesity is a leading cause of Diabetes and High Blood Pressure, both of which are contributing risk factors for heart disease. Managing your weight is imperative in taking control of your heart health. Adding an exercise plan and reducing calories (especially carbohydrates) can certainly be an effective method in slimming down. This weight loss will reduce blood pressure and the workload of the heart muscle. It may also contribute to lower cholesterol and reduce stroke and heart attack risk.Exercise may be hard to implement regularly at first. It may be a dreaded thought for some. Finding an exercise you enjoy will lead to a much higher success rate in continuing your fitness goals. Over a year ago, I found the sport Pickleball. This is the fastest growing sport in America – and so fun! Pickleball is basically indoor tennis played with a paddle and whiffle ball instead of using a racquet and yellow rubber ball. It is fast paced and a great cardiovascular workout. I have become slightly addicted to it (but what better vice to be addicted to than exercise!). Others may enjoy Zumba, Yoga, walking, running, swimming or gym workouts. Best advice, find something you enjoy and have small, achievable goals.Eating right is also hard to do in our fast-paced society. Fast food is found around every neighborhood block. It is inexpensive and convenient. It is advertised everywhere and even delivered to our doorsteps. What we don’t want to hear is how unhealthy fast food is. In general these convenience foods are high in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and sodium. They are made to satisfy the palate and brain as these “feel good” foods produce endorphins in the brain and make us
temporarily feel happy. Reducing the intake of fast or processed frozen foods can certainly be a game changer when it comes to making the weight loss goals for 2020 and will reduce your risk for heart disease. As we age, our bodies simply do not need as many calories. Seniors need to promote their activity and often need to reduce their caloric intake as well. At BPI you will see our meal portions adapted to suitable caloric intakes and a variety of physical activities offered to keep one fit. A favorite physical activity at BPI is using our recumbent cross trainer (The Nustep). This allows people to obtain a good cardiovascular workout in the seated position and tones multiple areas of the body. Currently we have a Nustep coach who is available and can offer 1:1 training sessions. This February, I invite you to jump start to a heart healthy year by joining as a BPI Member. We will help you to achieve your heart healthy goals while you have fun! Please contact us for more information about this topic or to join us by calling 442-8136.
