WHAT IS ENGINEERING?By: Pang Yang

ENGINEERING IS…

According to Wikipedia, “Engineering is the science, skill, and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and also build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes.”

The use of math and science to solve problems (Georgia Tech 2008)

WHAT IS AN ENGINEER?

An Engineer is someone who build structures, produce parts, assemble products, and solve problems.

What is an Engineer?

WHAT DO ENGINEERS DO

Design and develop new products Use principles of science Run tests Create and build things Use the design process to help solve

problems

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

A series of steps Engineers uses to create products.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

What is the problem? What are the goals?

STEP 2: RESEARCH THE PROBLEM

What caused the problem? State of problem (how bad is it). What are the solutions?

STEP 3: DEVELOP POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

Brainstorm possible solutions

STEP4: SELECT THE BEST POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Determine which solutions best meets requirements

STEP 5: CONSTRUCT A PROTOTYPE

Model the solution Drawing it out Building the part Follow the plan Create it

STEP 6: TEST AND EVALUATE THE SOLUTION

Is it working? Does it meet requirements?

STEP 7: COMMUNICATE THE SOLUTION

Share with peers why this solution works and best fit the problem.

Present finding and final results.

STEP 8: REDESIGN

Make improvements If solution did not solve problem or have

created new problem, repeat step 2-8 as necessary.

ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS IN USE

Here are a couple examples on how the Engineering Design Process works.

Engineering Design Process

What does an Engineer Do?

ASSIGNMENT: WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Decide on what field of Engineering you are interested in learning more about.

Base on field of study, you will be put into groups.

Each group will research the field of study and answer the following questions (refer to handouts)

Each group will be given a problem. Use the Engineering Design Process to come up with a solution. Fill out worksheet.

ASSIGNMENT: WHAT IS ENGINEERING? CONTINUES

After researching the field, each group will organize the data collected and create a presentation using Prezi or PowerPoint.

Everyone will be graded as a group as well as an individual.

Everyone must complete and submit a group evaluation.
