What do you know about Africa?

What comes to mind?...

PS: Africa is a continent, not a country. What's the difference?

Africa Is Diverse

No other continent is as diverse as Africa. Why?:

1. A diverse geography

2. A long pre-history (diverse people)

Africans are more genetically diverse than the inhabitants of the rest of the world combined. In fact, 9 out of 14 DNA markers exist only among African

populations and people descended from them

Geographic Diversity• Desert• Rainforest

– Dense trees– Lack of edible vegetation

• Mediterranean type– Northern coast & southern

tip– Fertile soil / milder climate

• Savanna– Grassy plains dotted with

trees (40% of continent)• Highlands

– Temperate grasslands in mountainous regions

What geographic features limited movement in Africa and what made them obstacles?

Africa is the only continent that covers the northern and southern temperate zones (north-south axis).

Some African societies have kept their own traditional way of life…

does this make them “primitive” or “uncivilized”?

Some Africans have more modernized societies that resemble

other parts of the world

Some Africans still have traditional societies, with their own traditional

leaders and customs

These are both scenes from the country of Ghana

Accra, Ghana

Johannesburg, South Africa

Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Lagos, Nigeria

Nairobi, Kenya

This is a satellite image of Africa at night… what can you learn from it?

The cities of Africa light up the night sky for miles, while many rural parts of

Africa have little or no electricity…

Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Nairobi, Kenya

Johannesburg, South Africa

Would you rather live in a city or a traditional village in Africa? What are the

positives and negatives?

Samini - Movement

Africa is modernized in things such as pop culture, nightlife, etc. Check this

song out… it is an example of “hiplife”… a mixture of reggae, hip-

hop, and African rhythms. Nigeria and Ghana have been at the forefront.

We can learn more about Africa’s past by studying those African communities that have kept most of their original traditions

In order to learn about Black History, we start with African History…

Now that we have addressed

some myths about Africa, we can learn about African history
