What is Advent?

• Advent marks the beginning of the Christian year.– This is the Church’s New Year’s Day

• The word Advent means 'arrival' or 'coming'.

• Preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth

• Advent is a period lasting 4 Sundays (not weeks!)

• Begins on Nov. 30 or the nearest Sunday to it.

Symbols of Advent• Advent Wreath

– Reminds us of God– Represents God’s eternity & endless mercy

w/no end– The color green represents hopes we have

in God

• Advent Candles of the wreath– The Candle of HOPE– The Candle of PEACE– The Candle of LOVE – The Candle of JOY

– The Candle of HOPE-Prayers focused on hope• Represents patriarchs of Abraham & David

– The Candle of PEACE• Reminds us that foretold that the Messiah would be

born

– The Candle of LOVE • Represents John the Baptist who baptised Jesus Christ

– The Candle of JOY• Represents the joy Mary, Mother of Jesus was when she

was told by the Angel Gabriel that she would have a special baby

– Fifth Candle-Represents the birth of Jesus on Christmas day
