Semantics •Is a field in which lexical sets are

particular y useful .•Meaning: (WORD ASSOSIATION,

CONCEPT)

categories :Example • 'Cat, dog, tortoise, goldfish, gerbil' is part

of the topical lexical set pets,

• and 'quickly, happily, completely, dramatically, angrily' is part of the

syntactic lexical set adverbs.

•Thanks giving ,day of the death, Halloween, new year, Christmas . Is part of the lexical sets holidays .

•Volleyball, football, aerobics , soccer, jogging. Is part of the lexical sets sports.

Phonetics "The term 'lexical set' . . . was devised by

John Wells (1982) as a convenient way of identifying vowel categories not by symbols, but by a set of words in which they occur.

•KIT Ship, bit, sick ,stiff, pith, this, wish,

rib, kid, dig, bridge, give, his, fill ,

sing, milk.

Although the vowel in a set like CUP, LUCK, SUN may vary from one variety of English to another.

pedagogical implications •The lexical set is useful for students who

do not have a background in phonetics, since it allows them to identify the sounds involved, even if the symbols for them are not known.

Pedagogical implications It is suggested to teach vocabulary to your students

through lexical sets.

• Advantages:• It’s easier to retrieve words from memory .• Helps learners to see how knowledge can be organized• Makes the meaning of words clearer by seeing how they are related• The learning of 1 item reinforce the learning of another

easily and helps them to understand the relations

between words .
