Artifactual DealingsCentury-old Rossland carnival medal nets $150
Part of an ongoing look at items of local interest being auc-tioned on eBay.
As Rossland gets set to host its an-nual winter carnival, an artifact from the carnival of 99 years ago sold last week for $150 US.
It’s a sterling silver medal awarded to members of the 1913 Rossland intermediate hockey team, which secured the champi-onship that year.
Prior to World War I, winners of the vari-ous hockey competi-tions at the carnival — senior men’s and women’s, junior and intermediate — were considered provincial champions.
At least one match-ing medal has sur-vived, and is in the personal collection of Spokane hockey historian Paul Dela-ney. It belonged to his grandfather, William Ehlers, who was on
the team.Th e seller was in
Vancouver, the lone bidder from Nelson.
• A postcard show-ing buildings at Chris-tina Lake with the pencilled-in caption “Beach’s store and cottage” sold recently for $28 US.
According to Lin-coln Sandner in Christina Lake: An Il-lustrated History, Bill Beach, an old bache-lor, ran a store and of-fi ce on LaValley Point, as well as a dance hall. During U.S. prohibi-tion in the 1920s, he was also a thriving bootlegger.
“If I remember cor-rectly, he was caught three times,” Sand-ner writes. “I think
the fi nes were $150 the fi rst off ense, $300 for the second, and $500 for the third of-fense. As Bill didn’t have $500, that time he went to jail. I think the sentence was for one year.”
Not long aft er his imprisonment, Beach’s health be-gan to fail, so he was moved to an old folks home, where he died a few years later.
• A nice ca. 1910s real photo postcard showing a sternwheel-
er arriving at Arrow-head sold this month for $44 US. Th e cap-tion erroneously reads “Arrowhead Lake, B.C.” instead of Upper Arrow Lake.
Another copy of this postcard sold on eBay in 2005 for $45 US.
In the foreground is the terminus of the railway that connect-ed Arrowhead with Revelstoke. By the late 1950s, sternwheelers no longer plied the lake, and a decade later, Arrowhead it-self was drowned out by the construction of the High Arrow Dam.
Th e postcard’s sell-er was in Winnipeg, the buyer in Nelson.
• Another Ar-rowhead item sold this month as well: a wooden coat hanger advertising the fi rm of McGaghran & John-ston, which went for $31 US.
Th e Vernon seller also sold a coat hang-er from Nelson mer-chant tailor J. Small-wood for $15 US.

NewsTransit merger in worksGREG NESTEROFFNelson Star Reporter
Pam Worsnop, right, tries to break the hold of Charlotte Truant dur-ing the ladies self defence course held Saturday at Trail Martial Arts. Six women came out for the afternoon course taught by martial arts master Jason Ayles to learn the fi ner points of non-confrontational, and confrontational, confl ict resolution.
Timothy Schafer photo
Th e two local re-gional districts are moving toward an amalgamated transit system by April 2013 that could see one fl eet, one fare sched-ule, and one staff pool.
Th e Regional Dis-trict of Central Koo-tenay's bus system is a $3 million per year service that requires modifi cations to re-main viable, admin-istrator Jim Gustafson wrote in a memo to the board.
"Th e current ser-vice arrangement has worked well for many years and public tran-
sit is available on a limited basis through-out much of the West Kootenay," he said. "Staff is suggesting we need to push the ser-vice towards greater sustainability."
He says they should look at a new govern-ing and operating model, as well as a 10-year fl eet replacement program.
"Arguably, togeth-er local government is operating a bus company as much as a transit system," Gustafson wrote. "Transit links between Balfour and Trail are extensive and cover a 100 km span."
However, a "more eff ective organiza-
tion" that uses a sin-gle bus fl eet and rate card, and possibly one taxation source "may prove the diff erence between a struggling service and a new sustainable service for the future."
Local governments across the RDCK and Regional District of Kootenay Boundary
need to work to-gether and with BC Transit on the new model, he said.
Regionalized tran-sit was tentatively en-dorsed about a year and a half ago, and the RDCK board gave its blessing last week to further exploring the concept.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Many new realizations are coming your way now and this trend will continue. Heart opening experiences are
featured. These may have mystical leanings or at least activate feelings of compassion for others. Meanwhile, your
ambitions are on the rise. Circumstances are pushing you to be more aware, committed and responsible.
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Your career and/or public life are getting some extra attention. It is possible that you have made some sacrifices in
this respect and you are ready to cash in. Loving friends are coming forward, as if suddenly. This stands to be an
expansive and exciting time for you. Yet, you may still feel green and realize that you have a lot to learn.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Your higher mind is being activated. Visions of the future are streaming through your mind. Yet, you are not out of
the dark entirely yet. Continued inner work to feel faithful about things is probably necessary. Patience with people
and situations remains important. Circumstances are directing you to express compassion and selfless love.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Probing some of life’s deeper mysteries continues as a central theme. You want answers like never before!
Meanwhile, increasing the scope and quality of your connections with others feels right. You may still have some
deep lingering fears you must contend with. Imagine that in doing so you will claim hidden gifts and powers,
because you will!
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Exciting relationships activations are yours to enjoy now. The exchange of ideas feels profound and prolific.
Sharing higher minded truths will bring rewards. Your desires are running deep these days and the passion is
there, yet your drive may not be equal to these. Give more time to achieve your goals; slow down yet persevere.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)Activating changes in your daily routine is now in focus. You want to feel clear in your mind and energetic and so are
taking measures to succeed. You may suddenly find yourself changing your diet. Deep feelings of love for significant
others are being stimulated. Yet, give them room too be themselves and do not lean either.
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)An exciting wave of creativity is washing in. This will inspire you to make changes in who you relate with and how.
Relationships will be scrutinized for their worth. You may not act on your feelings right away, at least not outwardly. This is a
good time to do inner work to clear subconscious angers, fears and blocks, especially if these are blocking intimacy.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)Creative projects in the safety of your home spell happiness now. You may be in an inventive mood. Inspirations
and/or the need to re-invent yourself some how, or to make changes in your lifestyle are likely. Your social life is
poised to expand. You should already see the signs. Make the most of this window of opportunity.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)A busy cycle is now underway. With a lot of people to see and places to go you stand to cover a lot of ground. Yet, you
may also have unfinished business to attend to, which is a good idea. This may include attending to you health. Desires
to remain close to home are also strong. Perhaps you can invite people to your home to strike the balance.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)Gathering ideas, plans and prospects is on your mind. You want to feel secure that you have everything you need for
success. Flirting with new possibilities can include projects as well as people. Yet, you also want freedom or at least are in
a very independent mood. Making key investments is part of the plot because you want measurable returns.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)You are in a pioneering mood and may even feel a bit punchy and aggressive. Many new perceptions are stimulating your
thought processes. Getting clear on what are your own genuine needs verses those of others is important now. If you don’t
you could feel confused and moody or reactive and thus alienate others. Direct your energies to realize your ideals.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Getting things done behind the scenes is extra important now. This is a good time to rest and retreat as well.
Balancing both urges can mean accepting fewer invitations or being mindful not to escape into the television
or internet…. Get clear on what you want to achieve and pace yourself. The tendency to scatter your energies
remains high so be deliberate.
TIP OF THE WEEK: Just hours after the New Moon in Aquarius,
Mars turned retrograde in Virgo. Mars entered Virgo back in mid November and
due to it turning retrograde it will remain there until early July. Of itself, Mars in Astrology is symbolic action and self-expression. The 1st planet outside the
orbit of our own planet and the ruler of Aries (the 1st sign of the Zodiac), Mars symbolizes action upon the purpose of the Sun, the thinking and perceptions of Mercury, the desires and wants of Venus, the emotional feelings and needs of the Moon and the practical
needs and desires of life on Earth. Mars can most basically be interpreted as one’s style and mode of self-expression. Mars retrograde in Virgo often stirs conflicts in personal relationships. The projection of expectations and high ideals leading to disappointments in
others are some of the main issues. This can make people hard on others and then on them selves by reaction. At best, Mars retrograde can be interpreted as having a more spiritual and less material ambition. In other words, achieving one’s material goals and satisfying desires as is generally the case when Mars
is Direct is reversed or the urge and passion is diverted. Until spiritual goals are met, outer worldly ambitions will be set aside.

As mushers and dogs plowed through the 2012 Rail Trail 200 International Sled Dog Race course, the unsung heroes were the volunteers and their eff orts to put the event together.
Bruce Sims, a mem-ber of the board and route co-ordinator, felt this year’s event was fairly successful.
“It’s a lot easier this year than in our fi rst year,” he said. “Th ere were alterations to
the trail since last year. Th e fi rst half of it was basically the same trail as last year but we re-did the western side of it, so the trip back was dif-ferent.”
Sims not-ed there still needs to be more modifi -cations, but there are many factors includ-ing landowners to take into account.
“We’re still looking for the perfect trail
because we haven’t found it yet,” Sims stated. “We’re going to let this one sink in for a while before we think about next
year.”Rail Trail 200 fo-
cuses to highlight the Boundary’s history of former train and logging routes by fol-lowing old roads and tracks, beginning in Grand Forks and concluding in Green-wood.
Th is year, there were fi ve teams regis-tered for the 200-mile (322 km) race and two teams for the 100-mile (161 km) race.
Clearwater, BC resident Steve Mul-len won the 200-mile race with 12 dogs and
Jillian Taylor from Rocky Mountain
House, Alta. was the fi rst to ever complete
the 100-mile race with eight dogs.
