GovernorMikePencehasproclaimedMayasMotorcycleSafetyandAwarenessMonth,remindingallmotoristsandmotorcycliststoshareIndianaroadsandpracticesafedrivinghabits.ThewarmweatherofspringbringsincreasedmotorcycletrafficwithHoosiersridingforrecreationandtransportation.

Manyseriousandfatalcrashesoccurwhenmotoriststurninfrontofmotorcyclists.Beawareofmotorcycles,especiallyatintersectionsandwhileturningandchanginglanes.Itisdifficulttoaccuratelyjudgethetime,speedanddistanceofanapproachingmotorcycle.Beforeyoudrivethroughanintersectionormakeaturn,checkthepositionofoncomingmotorcyclesatleastoneortwotimes.

Tips for passenger vehicles: • Watchattentivelyfor

motorcycles.Checkblindsspotsbeforechanginglanesandlooktwiceatintersectionsbeforeyouturnorpulloutintotraffic.

• Useyourturnsignalswhenchanginglanes.

• Anticipatehazardsthatmayconfrontamotorcyclistlikelargepotholes,debris,orgenerallypoorroadconditions.

• Allowatleasttwosecondsoffollowingdistancebetweenyourvehicleandamotorcycle.

• Becautiouswhenturningleft.Thisisaprimarycauseofcrashesbetweenvehiclesandmotorcycles.

• Sharetheroad,motorcyclistsareentitledtooperateinafulllane.

• Obeyalltrafficlaws.

Allmotorcycleridersshouldwearhelmets.AccordingtotheIndianaCriminalJusticeInstitute,151motorcyclefatalitiesoccurredinIndianaduring2012.Ofthose

fatalities,122peoplewerenotwearinghelmets.Notwearingahelmetmightsaveyoutwoseconds,butitcouldcostyoutherestofyourlife.

Constructionzonesandunevenroadsurfacescanalsobeadeadlyareaformotorcyclists.IndianaStatePolice(ISP)andtheIndianaDepartmentofTransportation(INDOT)encourageallmotorcycliststobeextravigilantwhileridingthroughthesesites.Manyroadwayswillberesurfacedoverthenextseveralmonthsandmotorcyclistsshouldbeawareof“edgetraps,”whichoccurwhenonelaneishigherthantheother.Aninexperiencedorinattentivemotorcyclistcaneasilylosecontrolwhenencounteringthese“edgetraps.”

whileriding.During2012,36motorcyclefatalitiesoccurredinIndianainvolvingalcohol.

visibilityandwatchforturningvehicles.

• Avoidridinginblindspots.

IfyouhavefinishedyourHealthyLifestylesWell-BeingAssessment,andarereadyforthenextstepinupgradingyourplan,StepTwoiscompletingyourbiometricscreening.Abiometricscreeningisashorthealthexamthatprovidesinformationaboutyourriskforcertaindiseasesandmedicalconditions.Completingabiometricscreeningisagreatwaytobeproactiveinyourwell-being,becauseyoureceivedetailedhealthresultsandfindoutyournumbers.Knowingyournumberscanhelpyouunderstandwheretotakeactiontoimproveyouroverallhealth.

Thebiometricscreeningissimilartotestsorderedatanannualphysicalandincludesbodymeasurementsandasimplefingersticktoobtainasmallbloodsample.Thefollowingmeasurementsarecollected:

• Fastingglucose,Triglycerides• Systolicanddiastolicbloodpressure• Height,weight,BMI(bodymass

Evenifyouarenotenrolledinourmedicalplan,itisstillimportanttoobtainthesehealthnumberssoyoucanassessyourownriskofdevelopingcertaindiseasesorconditions.Thesespecificbiometricmeasurementshavebeenchosenbecausetheyareleadingindicatorsfordiabetes,heart

diseaseandobesity.IfyouhavealreadyfinishedStepOneofqualifyingforthenewWellnessCDHPbycompletingyourHealthyLifestylesWell-BeingAssessmentbutwereunabletofillinallofthenumbersinthequestionnaire,youcangobackaftercompletingyourbiometricscreeningandenterupdateddata.

TherearetwowaystocompleteyourbiometricscreeningforStepTwooftheWellnessCDHP.ThefirstistoscheduleanappointmentatoneoftheState’sfreescreeningevents.Thesearescheduledatvariouslocationsacrossthestateandarefreetoplanmembers.IfyouworkataDepartmentofCorrectionsFacilityorStateHospital,pleasecontactyouron-siteStatePersonnelstafftoscheduleyourscreeningappointment.Allotheremployeesmaymakeanappointmentusingtheonlineschedulingsystem.

Good nutrition helps build strong bones and muscles It’snosecretthatgoodnutritionisacornerstoneofahealthybody.RegisteredDietitianshavebeenshoutingforyearsabouttheimportanceofahealthydiettomaintainanidealbodyweightandmanagechronicdiseaseslikediabetesandhypertension.Butwe’dlikeyoutoknowthere’smoretoitthanthat.Whatweeateffectsboneandmusclegrowthaswell.

Strong BonesBonesarethebody’sfoundationandcreatingstrongonesareessential.CalciumandVitaminDaretherockstarsofbonehealthandnecessarytobuildinghealthybones.Foodslikemilk,yogurt,fortifiedsoymilkandfortifiedorangejuicecanbequickwaystogetinyourdailyCalciumneeds.Otherfoodslikecannedsalmonorsardines,whitebeansandleafygreens(kale,spinach,mustard,etc)provideCalciumaswellinsmallerdoses.VitaminDisimportanttoassistwithCalciumabsorptionandcanbeeasilyobtainedbyeatingfisheslikehalibut,catfish,cannedsalmonandtunaaswellasfortifiedfoodssuchasmilk,soymilkandorangejuice.VitaminDcanalsobecreatedbyourbodythroughsunexposure;howeverit’slesslikelythatenoughcanbeproducedthisway,particularlyduetouseofsunscreentoprotectourskin.

It’simportanttomaintainappropriatelevelsofCalciumandVitaminDthroughoutourlifetowardoffosteoporosis,abonediseasecausedwhentoolittleboneiscreatedorhasbeenlostduetoinadequatedietandexercise.

Otherimportantfactorstoconsideraretheeffectsofotherfoodsand

medicationoncalciumabsorption.Dietshighinsodiumhavebeenshowninstudiestoincreaseurinarycalciumlossandinturncreatepotentialforboneloss.Theconsumptionofsodahasalsobeenstudiedasitpertainstocalciumabsorptionandbonefracture.Whileresearchagreesthatincreasedcaffeineplaysaroleindecreasedcalciumabsorption,itisnotconclusivethatdrinkingsodaingeneralisresponsible.Risksoffracturehavebeenshowntobehigherinpersonsconsumingcolas,howeveracommontheoryforthisincreasedriskis,bydrinkingmoresoda,wenaturallydrinklessofthefluids(suchasmilk)thatarehighincalcium.Inaddition,somemedicationsmaybelesseffectiveiftakenwithcalciumsupplements(tetracycline’s)orhavetheoppositeeffectandincreasecalcium

levelsinthebody(levothyroxine,diuretics)andshouldbediscussedwithaphysicianbeforetaking.

Strong MusclesWhileourbonesarethefoundationofourbodies,

it’sourmusclesthatkeepusmoving.Musclehealthisaffectedbyourfoodchoiceaswellandshouldnotbeoverlooked.Ingeneral,ahealthydietiskeytomaintainingactivemuscles.Wholegrains,fruitsandlowfatdairyareexcellentcarbohydratesourcestoprovidetheenergyneededtogetthemmoving.However,itsproteinintakethathelpstomaintainandbuildmuscleproperlyinconjunctionwithregularexercise.Proteinbuildsmuscletissuewhichisimportantnotonlyinstagesofhumangrowth,butinrepairofcellsandtissueoverourlifetime.Athletesinparticularshouldseetheirdietitianto

helpthemdeterminehowmuchproteintheyneedtomaintainleanbodymuscleandrecoverproperlyafteraworkout.Highproteindietsdonotequatetobigger,strongermuscles.

Inadditiontoprotein,VitaminCandZincarecriticalnutrientswhenwehaveahealinginjurysuchassurgicalwounds,tornligamentsortendons.Bothcanbefoundreadilyinawellbalanceddiet.

Ironalsoaffectsmusclehealthindirectly.Ironcreateshemoglobinwhichcarriesmuchneededoxygentoourmusclestoworkeffectively.Whenironstoresinthebodyarelow,itcanleaveustiredandweakfeeling,andinturnbecomelessactive.Activityisimperativetomaintainingstrongmusclesandwithoutittheybecomeweakanddeteriorateasaresultofmusclewasting.Beforeconsideringironsupplements,consultyourphysiciananddietitianastoomuchironinthebodycanleadtootherhealthproblems.

Ingeneral,consumingawellbalanceddietwillbeessentialtomaintainingproperhealthofbothourbonesandmuscles.FollowingtheUnitedStatesDepartmentofAgriculture’s“ChooseMyPlate”informationassistsinpropermealplanningformosthealthypeople.PersonswithspecialhealthcareconcernsshouldconsulttheirPhysicianandRegisteredDietitiantoproviderecommendedmodifications.ClickheretofindaRegisteredDietitiannearyou.

Musculoskeletaldisordersaffectthemuscles,ligamentsandtendons,andbones.Theseconditionsarecausedbyavarietyofreasons.Somearetheresultofoveruse,thewearandtearofdailyactivities,andothersarecausedbyatraumaorinjurytoanarea.Thepainfrommusculoskeletalproblemscanmakeone’sentirebodyacheandcauseanxiety,stress,depression,angerandfatigue.Therearewaystolivewellwiththesechallenges,though.

Arthritisisoneofthemostcommonmusculoskeletaldisorders.Arthritisincludesallofthediseasesandconditionsthataffectjointsandthetissuesinandaroundthejoints.Althoughtherearemorethan100differenttypesofarthritis,osteoarthritisandrheumatoidarthritisarethemostcommon.ArthritisisthemostcommoncauseofdisabilityintheU.Sandaffectspeopleofallages.Accordingtothe2012BehavioralRiskFactorSurveillanceSystem,nearly28percentofHoosierswereevertoldbyadoctor,nurseorotherhealthprofessionalthattheyhavesomeformofarthritis,rheumatoidarthritis,gout,lupusorfibromyalgia.

Pain,aching,stiffnessandswellinginoraroundjointsareafewofthosesymptomsthatcanlimitactivityforapersonwitharthritis.Commonjointsaffectedsuchastheknees,hips,shouldersandthespine,canlimitone’smobilityandoverallqualityoflife.AccordingtotheCentersforDiseaseControlandPrevention(CDC),arthritislimitstheactivitiesof21millionAmericansForoneinthreeadultsofworkingage(18-65years)witharthritis,itcanlimitthetypeoramountofworktheydoorwhethertheycanworkatall.1Morethan50

percentofHoosierswitharthritisnotedactivitylimitations.2

AnotherfactorformanyoftheseAmericansisthatarthritisoftenoccurswithotherchronicconditionssuchas,heartdisease,diabetes,highbloodpressureandobesity.

Despitethedailychallengesoflifewitharthritis,therearewaystomanagetheconditionandlivewell.Inmakingchangestolifestyletocontrolarthritis,guidancefromahealthcareproviderisalwaysrecommended.Tryoneofthefivesuggestionsbelowtopreventormanagearthritis.

1. Be active–Researchhasshownthatphysicalactivitydecreasespainandimprovesfunction.Startslowanddon’toverdoit!
