• Inform the parents of the school’s participation in Title I

• Explain the requirements of the Title I program

• Description and explanation of the forms of academic assessment used

• Explain how a student becomes eligible for services and exiting the program

• Timely information about the Title I program

• Description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school

• Proficiency levels students are expected to meet

What is Title I Reading?

Title I Reading is a supplemental reading program that serves students in grades 1, 2, and 3.

Students in Title I are included in the regular classroom for reading and language arts, just like always.

What is Title I Reading?

Students in Title I receive extra instruction and support in developing reading skills and strategies.

Our goal is to help students read so well that they no longer need extra help.

What is Title I Reading?

Title I Reading focuses on the five essential components of reading instruction:

Phonemic awareness

Phonics

Fluency

Vocabulary development

Reading comprehension

Selection for Title I Reading

Assessment 1- Fluency score from May at the end of your child’s last grade.

Assessment 2- Fluency score from Fall of this year.

Selection for Title I Reading

Assessment 3 – Teacher recommendations or if your child was in the program in a previous year.

Assessment 4 – for third grade students- the comprehension score on the 4 Sight test.

Why your child may have been selected for Title I Reading support

Below average score on two or more assessments

Additional support needed

Exiting the Title I Program

Goal 1- Student can read fluently- 90 wcpm for second graders, 110 wcpm for third graders.

Goal 2- Student uses reading strategies to correctly read on grade level material.

Goal 3- Student understands what he/she has read.

What happens during Title I Reading Time?

A small group of students come to Title I

3/4/5 times per week for 30 minute periods.

Instruction is provided to complement and support reading instruction in the classroom.

What happens during Title I Reading Time?

For example, if the 2nd graders are working on reading words with vowel teams in the room, then the Title I students will be working on the same skill.

What happens during Title I Reading Time?

If third grade students are learning about comparing and contrasting, then the Title I students will be learning to compare and contrast.

What happens during Title I Reading Time?

Throughout the year, Title I students will be learning:

Sight words

Decoding skills

Reading strategies

Vocabulary development

Comprehension skills

What happens during Title I Reading Time?

Students review sight words (25 words).

Practice a decoding skill, a reading strategy or a comprehension skill

Discuss the meaning of key vocabulary

Read a story at their reading level

Select 1-2 books on their level to read at home

How parents can help

Review sight words each evening

Hear your child read their books

Have your child reread their Repeated Reading selection (Read Naturally story) each evening

How parents can help

Read with and to your child

Contact the classroom teacher or Title I teacher if you have questions or concerns

Don’t tell words until your child has tried to read the words with your help

Do explain unfamiliar words

Ask your child what is happening in the story
