Council of Medical Schemes Enquiry

RE: Medical Funder Claw Backs

Letter to Council of Medical Schemes

Apart from causing severe hardship, severe accounting difficulties (e.g. taxes had already been paid on these amounts), the non-compliance with the letter of the law (e.g. regulation 6(4)), and the wrong interpretation thereof (e.g. assumptions of fraud or unprofessional conduct, instead of proven fraud or misconduct) in these cases are problematic.

Letter to Council of Medical Schemes

Furthermore, the threat of non-payment, or the reversal of payments or the direct payment to patients pose enough of a commercial threat to providers that some sign, and actually change their coding behaviour in an effort to secure continued direct payments from the scheme. This in turn leads to coding behaviour that does not reflect the reality of the situation, i.e. where the patient was indeed receiving essential continuation of care after hours or over weekends.

Benefits of early referral

Early physiotherapy has been strongly associated with decreased use of lumbosacral injections, physician office visits for low back pain, and lumbar surgery, when compared with physiotherapy that occurred at later times

Gellhorn, A C, Chan L, Martin B and Friedly J. 2012 Management Patterns in Acute Low Back Pain: the Role of Physical Therapy. Spine 2012 37(9): 775-782

The SASP has developedEvidence-based clinicalguidelines for themanagement of low backpain (with or without radiculopathy) of less than3 months duration byphysiotherapists inSouth Africa. Evidence ‐based. Embedded in theBiopsychosocial model. Patient ‐centered care

Social Responsibility Projects

Sukumani Project we donated R7000-00 to this project PhysioFocus/Hitech Raffle – After being approached by numerous lecturers to support students of need. We asked Hi-tech for possible help, an awesome initiative was implemented. An ultrasound machine was donated which was raffled at R100-00 per ticket and all proceeds would go to the students in need.  105 tickets sold. 2 students help.

We managed to help two more students at the end of last year, with the help from a corporate partner

Thank you

Hope to see you in South Africa in 2017
