What does 5th grade reading look like?

Building Stamina – Being able to read at 45 minutes per setting at appropriate fluency.

Reading various genres.

Close reading vs. recreational reading.

Nightly Reading Log, 3,600 pages a year=900 pages per quarter=100 pages a week.

Improving Comprehension Skills

Students will actively learn and use specific comprehension strategies:SummarizationMaking an inferencePoint of ViewAuthor’s PurposeMaking Mental PicturesIdentifying Cause & EffectCompare and ContrastUsing text features

Expanding Vocabulary

Students will enhance their knowledge of unfamiliar words by purposely studying pertinent words found in literature and content.

For example: finding synonyms, antonyms, and being able to identify and use the correct definition of the word found in the text.

Spelling

Big Change!

Grade will be incorporated in the Language Arts grade which

includes writing, grammar, and spelling.

Writing our Way Through 5th Grade

• Narrative, Opinion, Informational• Many “quick” writes, summaries.• Across the curriculum…math,

social studies, and science. • Ideas, Organization, Conventions

and Sentence Fluency, Style (Voice and Word Choice).

Math Critical Areas: – Fractions: Developing fluency with addition and

subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication and division of fractions

– Extending division to 2-digit divisors– Integrating decimal and fractions into the place

value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to thousandths

– Developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)

– Developing an understanding of volume

ScienceCurriculum includes:– Constructive/Destructive Forces–Matter– Chemical and Physical Changes– Electricity and Magnetism – Plant and Animal Cells–Microorganisms– Classification of Plants & Animals

“Nuts and Bolts”• “B” Sheets – Signed by parent and returned on Monday

morning. • Mini Economy - Classroom Jobs – Auction• Transportation changes MUST be in writing. No changes

can be made over the phone.• Visitors MUST sign in; it’s the law!• No “drop-offs”! (homework, Target bags, book bags, etc.)

The only exceptions are eyeglasses, lunches, and medications.

• Remember to send a written excuse for absences (an easy-to-use form can be found on the school blog).

• Birthday treats: Please give me notice and no Gigi’s unless they are mini cupcakes.

Transportation• We will not be able to accept

guest riders on buses until further notice

• All transportation changes must require a written note.

• Students are never tardy if they ride the bus.

• Make sure that your child has given the bus driver the “Safe Driver Contract”.

Boosterthon•Our biggest fundraiser•Fully funds the PTA budget•Provides enrichment opportunities for ALL Sope Creek Students! •Focus on FITNESS, LEADERSHIP, & CHARACTER.
