Poetry Notes: Part1

PARTS of a Poem 3 minutes

• Title: name of the poem; quotation marks unless it’s a really long

• Subject: what the poem is about in 3 words or less (young love, mother/son bond, etc)

• Speaker: the person talking in a poem (like a narrator or main character)

• Verse: one line of a poem

• Refrain: a part of a poem that is repeated (like the chorus of a song)

• Stanza: a section of a poem; there are breaks between each (like a paragraph)

For Example:• Title: My Last Duchess

• Subject: Family, Lost Love, Death

• Speaker: The narrator

• Verse: She walks in beauty like the night

• Refrain: and miles to go before I sleep

and miles to go before I sleep

Stanza: Whose woods these are I think I know

His house is in the village though

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow
