Maths - Monday

Warm up!

Try these in your book

Warm up answers are at the end of the pack

FractionsWhat is a fraction?

A fraction is when you share a shape or amount into equal parts. It is very important that we always remember that each part is equal!

Fractions of shape. What are these fractions called?

Which one is: a halfa quartera third

What can help us work out our fraction?

1 part 1 part

1 part

2 parts 4 parts

3 parts

There is 1 green part – numerator

There are 4 parts in total - denominator

How do we write this fraction?

Is it 1 1 or 1

2 3 4

We can also write these fractions in words:

a half, a third, a quarter

What is the denominator?

What is the same and what is different about these fractions?

They are all unit fractions because the numerators are all 1

Who has split their square into equal parts?

Use the printed sheet to cut up and measure the parts.

You might need to use your measuring skills.

Can you explain to your adult your answer?

How many different ways can you colour in a half of the blocks – remember to be creative!

How do we find out how many blocks are half? How many blocks in total?

If unit fractions are only 1 part of the whole, what do you think non unit fractions are?

Yes! Non unit fractions are where the fraction is more than 1 part of the whole. Well done.

Can you draw and write these fractions in your books? How many parts are coloured in? That is the numerator. How many parts has the whole been split into? That is the denominator.

Can you draw and write these fractions in your books?

Draw these shapes in your book to answer the questions.

What is the important thing about fractions? Each part is __________l .

Challenge – only answer this if you want to.

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

Just like last week, we are going to be reading the Iron Man and doing some work about it. Each day, we will give you a little part to read, but if it is too hard, you can listen to it being read on YouTube. Make sure you follow the words while you are listening though!

The Return of the Iron Man

Today, please read from the beginning of Chapter 2 (p11) to p15 where it says “And so Hogarth’s father got home safely.”

If you are listening to the story instead, remember to stop the video in the right place!

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

Adjectives

• We found out last week that Ted Hughes was a poet. That means he is very good at describing things that give people a picture in their head.

• An adjective is a word that describes a noun.

Example

An iron man (Iron is the word that describes the man)

Bright headlamps (Bright is the word that describes the headlamps)

Adjective treasure hunt!• Look through the part of the story you have just read

to find an adjective to describe these things. There may be more than one! Write them in your books

____________ cliff

____________ figure

____________ gun

____________ farmer

____________ laugh (the farmer’s laugh)

____________ foot

Challenge! Think of your own adjectives to describe these things:

The ______________ rain

The _______________tractor

The _______________headlamps

Adjectives

• Choose 5 of the adjectives you found and use them to write your own sentences. The sentences don’t have to be about the Iron Man.

• Remember your capital letters and full stops!

Maths - Tuesday

Try these in your book

Warm up!

Yesterday we looked at 1 half, 1 quarter, 1 third

2 4 3

What is the numerator for each fraction? What is the denominator for each fraction?

The numerator is……………………………..

The denominator is …………………………..

Can you write these in your book including the correct answer below.

The total number of parts in the whole

The part/parts of the whole you have

We know that a unit fraction is where we have 1 part of the whole

If we have more than 1 part of the whole –this is called a non unit fraction

What are these fractions?

Remember to count how many parts you have or are coloured in

Then look at how many parts there are in total

Q. How many thirds make a whole? How many quarters make a whole? How many tenths make a whole?

Tenths

What is this fraction?

What is this fraction?

What is this fraction?

Can you draw these representations out and write the words and fraction in your books? Print out the squared paper to help you. You will need to fill some of the faces in to match the fraction

Did you get that they are tenths? Well done!1 tenth, 3 tenths and 6 tenths.

A fraction is where a whole is cut in to equal parts. Can the whole be cut into 9 parts, 7 parts, 15 parts? Yes! And that is the denominator.

Can you have 2 of the 9 parts? 3 of the 12 parts or 4 of the 15 parts? Yes! And that is the numerator.

2 3 49 7 15

Can you tell your adult these fractions?

Draw these out and write the correct fraction next to them in your book.

Can you remember the difference between a unit fraction and a non unit fraction?

Can you sort these?

Can you also write the fraction for each bar?

Draw 2 more bars and colour in and write a fraction for each bar

English - Tuesday

The Return of the Iron Man

Today, please read from p15 where it says “BUT” to p16 where it says “They would have to do something themselves.”

If you are listening to the story instead, remember to stop the video in the right place!

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

THINK!

You don’t need to write these answers down but have a

think about these questions.

Why do you think Ted Hughes wrote the word BUT in a

sentence on its own and in capital letters on p15 and SO

on page 16?

Questions!

• Ted Hughes has used lots of questions in this part of the story. How many did he use? (Count them! The answer is on the next page!)

• A question is a type of sentence that needs an answer. We use a at the end of a question.

• Why do you think he used so many?

Questions!

• All of these words can be used to start questions.

• How many of these does Ted Hughes use in this part of the chapter?

• He uses them because he is making his readers think about the questions that were in the farmers heads when they saw what had happened.

I counted 15

questions in this

part of the chapter!

How many did you

count?

Questions!

• Use each one of these question words to write a question about the Iron Man story so far.

• Remember a capital letter at the beginning of the question and a question mark at the end.

Example

How often did the Iron Man come and visit the town?

Maths - Wednesday

Try these in your book

Warm up!

Fractions as decimals We know that this is 1 tenth. 1

10

It is a unit fraction as it is just 1 part of the whole.

To convert tenths into decimals

What are the decimals for these fractions – use the table above to help.

Fraction and Decimal number wall.

What is the pattern of how these are written? Can you continue the sequence? What would be in the next box –0.7 or 7 or 7 tenths?

10

We can show decimals on a number line too

Carefully count along the number line – use the decimals above to fill in the boxes.

0.2 0.5 0.9 Well done if you got them right!

Can you estimate (make a clever guess) where these decimals would go?It gets trickier with the second one. You will need to add in the marks on the number line.

Which is the odd one out? Explain why?

Use the number wall to help you.

Challenge –only if you want to do it.

Look at table 1 – we have used counters to represent decimals. Can you draw counters in table 2 to represent the decimals.

Table 1

Table 2

English - Wednesday

The Return of the Iron ManToday, please read from p16 where it says “So what did they do?” to p19 where it says “…DANGER: KEEP OFF to warn people away, and they left it at that.”

If you are listening to the story instead, remember to stop the video in the right place!

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

Wanted – the Iron Man!

• A long time ago, before the days when people used phones and computers, if the police were looking for a criminal, they would make a wanted poster. They would stick it up all round town so people could look out for the criminal and get a reward if they found them.

• Sometimes the police still make wanted posterstoday. Next time you pass a police station, have alook on the noticeboard outside!

Wanted – The Iron Man!• Find and print this sheet

which we have saved as a separate document.

• You are going to make a wanted poster to help the farmers find the Iron Man.

• You can draw a picture of the Iron Man in the top box.

• Then write a description using adjectives so people know what he looks like.

Wanted – The Iron Man!

Example of how to write the description.

The Iron Man is as tall as a

house and he is made of

hard, grey metal. When he

walks, he makes a clanking

sound. His eyes glow like

headlamps on a car and

change colour from bright

red, to forest green. Have

you seen anyone who fits

this description?

Please use:

• Capital letters and full stops

• Proper sentences with verbs

• Present tense (as if it is happening now)

• Adjectives

Challenge

• Similes (think back to last week’s work)

• A question

Maths - Thursday

Warm up!

Try these in your book

Thursday is always Times Tables

Rockstars Day!

Either go onto the website, or

complete the 3 times tables test

we have given you as a separate

document.

Fractions of amounts

What do we need to remember when we are working with fractions? Yes! The parts of the whole are ALWAYS equal.

The numerator is always on the topThe denominator is always on the bottom

A unit fraction has a 1 on topA non unit fraction has something greaterthan 1 on top.

We want to find 1 of the counters2

We want to find 1 of the counters4

We want to find 1 of the counters3

What can we do to find the answer?

Look at the denominator –we need to share the counters into the denominator.

How many counters are there in total? To find we will split them into 2 equal parts

To find we will split them into ______ equal parts

To find we ______________________ equal ______

These have been started for you. Can you work out the answers?

You can draw counters in your books if it helps?

How many parts do we need to share the whole into?

What can you do to help you work this out?

How can we do this?Dexter has split his counters into quarters to find of 12

What will he need to split his counters in to find YES – into six parts – the denominator

To find he will need to split his whole into 9 EQUAL parts.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 97 lots of 2 = 14

Now draw bar model or picture to work these out

How many in my whole 20

How many parts in my denominator that I’m splitting it in to? shared into 5 equal parts

So I want 2 of those parts. How many do I have?

Work out the answers as we did on the previous slide.Draw a bar model and add in 10sand 1s counters.

Challenge – only do this is you want to.

English - Thursday

The Return of the Iron ManToday, please read from p19 where it says “Now the little boy Hogarth . . .” to p22 where it says “The Iron Man vanished.”

If you are listening to the story instead, remember to stop the video in the right place!

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

THINK!

You don’t need to write these answers down but have a think

about these questions.

Why did Hogarth tap the nail and the knife blade together?

What was his plan?

Where do you think the Iron Man has gone?

Pretend you are Hogarth!• On the next page, I have written a diary as if I am Hogarth,

but I have deliberately missed out some words.

• Copy out my diary and use the story to fill in the missing words. You can also include your own words if you want to.

• Be careful to copy out correctly and carefully! There should not be any spelling mistakes.

Challenge!

When you have completed the work, read back through your work and see if you can improve any of your words. If you have a thesaurus at home, this might help you. If you have access to the internet, there is an online thesaurus you can use:

Online Thesaurus

Pretend you are Hogarth!

To start with, I wanted to use the hole to trap a _________ . I watched the fox__________ the hole and sniff. Then it stopped sniffing and _________ . It had seen the __________ ___________ . It gave me an idea. First of all I found a _________ and a ____________ in my pocket and then I ______________ them together. When the Iron Man heard the sound he became __________ . His eyes __________ towards me. Then he ________ towards me. His headlamp eyes became _________ . I pressed myself against the ___________ . Then suddenly there was a loud ________________ and the Iron Man had _____________.

Maths - Friday

Warm up!

Try these in your book

What are these fractions called -unit fractions or non unit fractions?

Why?

Work these problems out.

We must look at the denominator to see how many equal groups we need to share the whole into.

Fractions Recap

Remember to look at the denominator.

Draw counters or base 10 to work out the answers

Colour in each of the fractions and add them together.

a) What is 2 of 96

3

b) What is 3 of 60

5

c) What is 3 of 52

4

Use place value counters

Challenge – only do this if you want to.Draw a cake. Divide it equally into the denominator then work out the answer

This one is quite tricky and you will need to work out the fraction amounts.

Look at the denominators – are they different?

What fraction does Alex have?

Look at the drawings - they are showing you the denominatoramount – how many groups we have to share the whole into.

Can you complete the rest of the table

Add the fractions together.

Colour in the fractions in (d) – can you work out the answer?

Well done!

English - Friday

The Return of the Iron ManToday, please read from p22 where it says “He was in the pit.” to the end of the chapter.

Chapter 2 - The Return of the Iron Man

THINK!

You don’t need to write these answers down but have a think

about these questions.

Do you think Hogarth did the right thing?

Do you think the farmers did the right thing?

Guided Reading

• We are going to answer some questions about Chapter 2 today.

• For some of the questions, we need to use inference. Inference is when we can work something out because of what is happening, even though the author might not have actually said what is going on.

Example

Look at this short part of a story below.

A little boy went to the beach with his mum and dad. They bought him an ice cream. A seagull swooped down and took his ice cream. The little boy cried.

Even though the author doesn’t say so, we know the little boy is feeling sad about his ice cream because he cried.

Guided Reading

Please answer these questions about Chapter 2 in your books.1. On page 12, what word tells us how Hogarth felt when he saw the Iron Man?

2. On p12, how do we know that the Iron Man made Hogarth’s mother feel scared?

3. How do you think Hogarth’s father felt when the farmer laughed at him on p13?

4. Who is asking all the questions on p15?

5. Why were the farmers angry with the Iron Man?

6. What do you think the Iron Man is doing with the farm equipment?

7. Think back to last week’s work. Can you find a simile on p16?

8. On p20, how do we know that it is nighttime?

9. How do we know the fox is afraid of the Iron Man?

10. Why do you think Hogarth feels guilty at the end of Chapter 2?

Challenge

On p12, there is a sentence that lets us know that The Iron Man has been to this town before. What sentence is it?

Geography

Natural Disasters – VolcanoesThere are lots of special words we use to describe volcanoes.

• Magma – liquid rock that is inside the earth

• Magma chamber – the special place inside the earth where the magma is held

• Crust – the surface of the earth

• Main vent – The tube which the magma comes out from

• Side vent - A side tube that magma comes out from

• Crater – the hole at the top of the volcano

• Lava – the name for the rock which is made when the magma comes out of the volcano

• Ash and gas cloud – when a volcano erupts, ash and gas come out too.

Natural Disasters - Volcanoes

• Find and print this sheet which I have saved as a separate document.

• Using the words from the previous slide, label the volcano.

Science – Making a volcano

Make sure you only do this with an adult!

Remember: if you touch anything DO NOT put your hands in your mouth.

Always wash your hands after. Have fun! Take so photos.

The science behind it!

• You just made a chemical reaction!

• By mixing acid (vinegar) and the alkali (bicarbonate of soda), bubbles of carbon dioxide (CO2) were released –like in a pyroclastic flow.

• A pyroclastic flow moves very fast and is extremely dangerous.
