Hounds
Vs.
2013 Results: The Hounds and Bayhawks split the regular-season series 1-1, while the Bayhawks claimed the MLL
Championship victory over the Hounds.
All-Time Series: Both teams are 2-2 against one another in the regular season, while the Bayhawks hold the postseason advantage 1-0.
The Hounds may have history on their side this week, as each of the four times these two teams met in the regular season, the home team came out victorious. However, the Bayhawks also defeated the Hounds on a neutral site
during the MLL Championship game in 2013. The biggest goal deficit in any of these matchups was six goals, in the first meeting of 2012, a 15-7 victory for the Bayhawks. Since that opening contest, three games have been decided by one goal, and one game by two goals. Given how hard these teams play each other, it is not surprising to learn they have racked up 29 penalty minutes in five games. This week the Hounds may need to keep an extra man on
Drew Westervelt, as the attacker has averaged five points per game against the third-year club. Meanwhile, Hounds attackman Ryan Young in three games against the Bayhawks has tallied eight goals and four assists.
HOUNDS
The Hounds last week got off to a better start against
the Launch, and kept the game tied 7-7 going into the
final quarter. But sloppy passes and bad shot
selection to continue to plague the Hounds, as they
scored just one more goal in the final quarter while
the Launch added another three to cap an 11-8
victory. There were some bright spots in the loss
though, as Tim Fallon’s performance at the faceoff X
(15-23) dramatically improved, giving the Hounds
more opportunity on offense. Matt Danowski, the
team’s leading scorer from a year ago, also got more
involved on offense playing from the midfield as
opposed to behind the cage. He accounted for three
of the Hounds’ eight goals.
Players To Watch
Pierce Bassett (G) – The rookie will likely get his second straight start, and looks to improve from just a
50.0 SV% in Week 2.
Matt White (M) – Off to a steady start in 2014, tallying two points in each of the first two games.
John Haus (M) – His return to MLL action wasn’t splashy, but expect the rust to be gone this week.
BAYHAWKS
The Bayhawks won back-to-back MLL titles in 2012 and 2013, but finally showed a little bit of a
championship hangover in their season opener, falling 15-9 to the Cannons in Boston. The team last week
looked much better for three periods, building a 10-5 lead over the Lizards heading into the final quarter.
But goalie Kip Turner allowed six goals in the fourth, which forced the game into overtime. The Bayhawks
were able to recover and pull out the victory, as Stephen Peyser tallied the game winner 1:31 into the
extra period. While last week was a hard-earned victory for the defending champions, the Bayhawks
have not shown the same kind of dominance to start 2014 as they have in past seasons.
Players To Watch
Brendan Mundorf (A) – In his first two games as a Bayhawk, the veteran already has amassed eight
points (5g, 3a).
Brian Spallina (D) – Even at the age of 36, Spallina remains one of the toughest and most fearless
defensemen in the league.
Kyle Dixon (M) – The longtime Bayhawk and perennial threat from long range is still looking for his
first point of the season.

NOTEWORTHY – May 10, 2014
CORE FOUR: There currently are four players on the Hounds roster that have been with the
team since its inception in 2012 – Matt Danowski, Adam Ghitelman, Ryan Flanagan and Brett Schmidt. However, the team returned 16 players from the 2013 season.
GOING STREAKING: Ryan Young enters Week 3 riding a 20-game streak of recording at least
one point, dating back to Aug. 11, 2012 (including the postseason).
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Attacker Dean Gibbons scored his first MLL goal last week
against the Launch.
TRANSITION GAME: With their collegiate careers complete, Hounds draftees Thomas
DeNapoli (Towson) and Kevin O’Neil (Villanova) will be eligible to make their MLL debut any
week now.
NINE LIVES: Of the Hounds’ 11 draftees, nine will continue to play on in the NCAA tournament,
including two each from Maryland and Loyola, four from Duke and one from UPenn.
PUT ME IN COACH: Three current Hounds serve as assistant coaches for NCAA tournament
bound teams, including Matt Danowski (Duke), Adam Ghitelman (Harvard) and Mason Poli
(Richmond).
DINO-MYTE: Matt Danowski needs just six more goals to hit the 150 mark for his career
(including the postseason). The attackman also is just eight assists away from reaching 100.
POWER OUTAGE: The Hounds have yet to score a powerplay goal this season, despite getting
four extra man advantages. They are the only MLL team without a PPG.
GOAL DIFFERNTIAL: Both the Hounds and Bayhawks have allowed 26 goals in two games, the
most in the MLL. Meanwhile, the Hounds have a league-low 16 goals, while the Bayawks have
the second fewest at 20.
