Best Practices for Cloud Backups

Getting Data to the CloudBackup Job:• Can be configured to send to the cloud, though

not recommended• Redundant Snapshots and stun of VM’s• Inconsistent backup data between local and

Cloud• Requires proper timing so local and remote jobs

do not conflict.

Getting Data to the CloudBackup Copy Job:• Pulls data from existing backups and sends to

cloud• No snapshots required• Consistent data across Local and Cloud sets• Stays in an “idle” state until new restore points

are detected

Backup Copy Intervals• Backup copy jobs do not run based on a schedule, instead they use

backup copy intervals.

Backup Copy Intervals• Copy interval is defined by Veeam as: “a time span in which the

backup copy job must copy a VM restore point from the source backup repository to the target backup repository.”

• Default of 1 day, meaning data must be copied to the cloud once per day.

• Results in daily incrementals to the cloud.

Backup Copy Intervals: Timing• If a backup hasn’t finished prior to reaching the end of a copy

interval, the Veeam job will fail with an error.• Timing is key to ensuring backups get sent to the cloud on a daily

basis.• ODS recommends setting the copy interval to start 15 minutes after

the local backup job for daily intervals• Allows ample time for data to get sent to the cloud, and reduces risk

of running over.• Copy intervals can be decreased for lower RPO requirements, and

will vary between customers
