Stockholm conventions for the Asia-Pacific region

Jakarta, Indonesia, 19 ‒ 20 March 2015

Background

In 2013, the extraordinary meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions decided to convene in 2015 back-to-back ordinary meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions that include joint sessions, where appropriate, on joint issues (BC-11/20, RC-6/12 and SC-6/25). Furthermore, in order to assist parties with the challenges and opportunities that such back-to-back meetings present, the conferences of the parties requested the Executive Secretary to support, within available resources, regional meetings to assist regional preparatory processes, coordinated with other regional meetings. In response to this request, four regional preparatory meetings were organized in March and April 2015.

1. The first regional preparatory meeting for the 2015 meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions for the Asia-Pacific region was held in Jakarta from 19 to 20 March 2015. It was held back-to-back with a regional workshop in support for the ratification and effective implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury which took place from 17 to 18 March 2015, including a joint session on 18 March 2015.

2. The objectives of the meeting were to provide information on the organization of work and items to be considered at the 2015 meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions to be held from 4 to 15 May 2015, and to provide opportunity for parties to discuss regional priorities and regional positions for the meetings.

3. The programme and the list of participants of the meeting are set out in annex I and II to the present proceedings, respectively. The meeting was attended by 155 participants, including representatives from 39 parties, 6 intergovernmental organizations, 6 non-governmental organizations and 6 Basel and Stockholm conventions regional centres.

4. The meeting was funded by the Government of Switzerland, with support of the Basel Convention Regional Centre in Jakarta (BCRC-Indonesia).
