To Our Parents and Students in Pursuit of Excellence: As I have labored in education for the past 17 years, it has come to my attention that society expectations have always been the same. Teachers, administrators and parents have sought to focus on goals that will enable our students and our school to reach a level of excellence. Today’s society demands a degree of excellence for our students to compete in a global economy. The pursuit of excellence then is mostly a journey and not a final destination. You’ve always heard the quote “Be the best that you can be,” and we should always strive to do our best. This is the journey towards excellence as we define excellence. I propose to you the seven “C’s” of excellence that will assist you in your journey. They are as follows:
1. Caring – Show concern for the well-being and success of others. Don’t pity others, but seek to understand them. Develop a plan for your learning.
2. Communication – How you relate to peers, teachers and parents is one of the most important “C’s” in your journey. One-sided communication can make your journey impossible. You should first seek to understand before you can be understood.
3. Challenge – Expect the best from yourself and you will get the best from others.
4. Collaboration – Work to make peers, parents and teachers a part of your team. Planning and working together can help you overcome the storms that interrupt your voyage towards your dreams. Teamwork makes each of us stronger than we can ever be alone.
5. Cooperation – Be flexible. The inflexible tree cannot stand against the strong winds of life. The willingness to do the best with what you have will make you successful.
6. Commitment – The lack of perseverance is the leak that causes many to sink. Establish good habits that will make it possible for you to succeed.
7. Celebration – Enjoy each day along the way. Evaluate your progress that you make along your journey and rejoice in the progress. Positive attitudes and praise may be the only thing others and yourself will
