WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, JANUARY 17TH, 2021
PASTORAL MESSAGE
Sometimes when you see a photograph, you look at it and think “I wish I had taken that picture.” At least I know I do. It may be when I see an image of a mother lion and her charges in Kenya, a breathtaking view from snowcapped mountains in Colorado, or a magnificent sunset in some exotic location. As powerful as these shots can be, sometimes it is a simple photo that makes me wish I had captured that once in a lifetime Kodak moment. That’s what I thought when I first came across the work of photographer Joe Schwartz and his image of two boys sitting on a park bench called “Two’s a Team.” Joe Schwartz was not a professional photographer. He just loved capturing photographs of the Brooklyn neighborhood where he lived. Orthodox Jews and Roman Catholic nuns in full habit inhabited the neighborhood as did street vendors, characters that could be found nowhere else, and children of all races playing together. Schwartz was not ignorant of the tensions between the races and immigrant groups that were a reality of the Brooklyn where he lived yet he saw in the midst of poverty examples of how life could be, how people could live in harmony if they so desired. He knew that a simple photograph of two boys enjoying each other’s company could remind us of innocence and ideals, perhaps even lead to change.
In many ways “Two’s a Team” is just a photograph of two boys sitting on a bench, but it is far more too. Judging from their size, they look about ten years old, give or take a year. The photo was captured in 1940 and you can see from their clothing the Depression was still in full force. They may have had dreams of being athletes. If they played a game that involved creativity, the limits of the adventure would only be the limits of their imaginations. They have a look on their face that lets you know mischief is not foreign to them, but what ten-year-old boy is not a bit mischievous? There is something that makes this photo mesmerizing. One boy is African American, the other boy is white. In some cities in the 1940’s, especially those in the South such as Atlanta or Birmingham, if two boys of different races sat on the same bench, it would have been illegal. It was probably an age of innocence for these two young lads who seemed to be the best of friends. In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus calls his first disciples. We hear the version in John’s Gospel where Andrew introduces Peter to Jesus. If we follow the story further, Nathaniel, also known as Bartholomew, follows as does Philip. In other Gospel stories James and John are among the first followers. We know that these followers who later become Apostles do not always understand Jesus’ mission, and one famous story where this is the case is when they try to get rid of the children who wish to see Jesus. Jesus says the famous words “Let the children come to me for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” Even in Jesus’ day, children did not have a jaded view of the world. Children then, like children today, were not perfect but there was an openness, a goodness, a genuineness. It’s easy to imagine Jesus seeing this in children. It gives us something to think of too. This weekend we celebrate the civil holiday honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and what he stood for, but we do so at a time when we are divided by racial issues and at a time that religion separates and divides rather than unites. Our country should be preparing for a Presidential inauguration, but we fear violence. This week will also mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision which recalls once again how human life is devalued in our society. We’ve had moments of unrest before, but somehow the events of today seem different. We look for solutions, and solutions can be found in Jesus’ ministry. Jesus begins his ministry by gathering people together and so much of his ministry brings people together. When Jesus healed the sick, they were able to join society once again. When Jesus welcomed the outcast, he showed they had value. When Jesus offered mercy and forgiveness, he let people know their sins were not going to exclude them. Jesus gathered all kinds of people. We like many of them such as the fishermen, the mothers with children, the average folks. We might balk a bit at some. Tax collectors and sinners might be hard to take, Zealots who were political revolutionaries of their day may have been a bit harder to take. Still Jesus saw the value of each of them. Pope Francis has an interesting observation in his most recent encyclical On Fraternity and Social Friendship. He states, “The path to peace does not mean making society blandly uniform, but getting people to work together, side by side, in pursuing goals that benefit everyone.” This is what Jesus wanted when he gathered people together, beginning with those who would become the Apostles, and he wanted to gather the wide variety of people he encountered to be the Church, God’s family. Maybe in this time of division and polarization, we as people who have said yes to our Baptismal call to follow Jesus, can try to see the value in all people, working together for the common good, trying to see the presence of Christ in others. This is not easy to do, but we have tremendous examples that can guide us. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, foundress of the Daughters/Sisters of Charity began a religious order that opened schools and hospitals, cared for immigrants and orphans, all at a time anti-Catholicism was rampant. St. Peter Claver saw the human dignity of African slaves. St. Katherine Drexel was one of the wealthiest heiresses of her time yet used her inheritance to open schools for African Americans and Native Americans. St. Francis Xavier Cabrini had a special love for the immigrants. Often our faith is best lived when we hold on to the ideals of Jesus Christ and see the dignity of all people. Perhaps in this time of division, that is what we are called to do in one way or another.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING Sacred Heart Parish & Saint Patrick Parish
Saint Patrick Parish has had secure online giving since 2013, with over 100 parishioners giving regularly. At this time we encourage BOTH parishes to use this site for easily making their donations. Sacred Heart parishioners can enter a note online (special intention) that they want donations to go to Sacred Heart and we have the capability of transferring that money to the proper parish account. The link to sign up for online giving is: www.osvhub.com/stpatswatertown/funds
There are baskets located immediately at the entrance to the church for your weekly offertory contributions. We continue to encourage parishioners to sign up for online giving, or we invite you to mail in or drop off envelopes to the secure mailbox outside the Collaborative office door.
Please continue to prayerfully consider how you can continue to offer your weekly financial support to our parishes.
The Grand Annual Collection is used to supplement the parish offertory collection and assists in funding the operating budget, as well as capital improvements and unforeseen expenditures. In these extraordinary times we thank our parishioners for your willingness to prayerfully consider their gifts to Sacred Heart and Saint Patrick.
Grand Annual
The good
In the Gospel today, Jesus asks “What are you looking for?” Often, we are looking for happiness in very selfish ways, but we find that when we look for ways to make
others happy, it is then that we truly become happy
As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are a sign of
God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust.
SAINT VINCENT DEPAUL Society
Sacred Heart Parish has received $14,516 of our budgeted goal of $20,000. Saint Patrick Parish has received $48,853 of our budgeted goal of $50,000.

For everyone’s safety we are blessed to have a small dedicated group of volunteers working to keep our pantry open. Please pray for them!
RCIA “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” We are now in the process of getting our RCIA Program ready for the new year. Our sessions will meet using Zoom, at least at the beginning. RCIA includes people interested in becoming Catholic, Catholics who were baptized but never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist, people who were baptized in another denomination and wish to be full members of the Church, as well as full members of the Church who share their own experiences and help prepare people to receive the Sacraments. People who participate in the RCIA are usually above the age of 7. Usually people receive the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. The length of the program varies, depending on the person ’s individual needs and desires.
If you think the RCIA may be just what you are looking for, here are some questions you might ask yourself:
1. Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic? 2. Are you baptized in another Christian faith but have been coming to Mass with your family? 3. Do you wonder just how long it would take to become a part of the Catholic Church?
Are you waiting for just the right time, thinking someday I’ll look into it?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, the RCIA may be the perfect fit for you. If you are interested, we ask you call the Collaborative Offices.
MARRIAGE Couples need to make an appointment with a Priest at least six months before the wedding date.
