Warm Up -
On your desk are two stickie notes. On one stickie note, write the POSITIVE
(good) things about using a Social Studies (or Science) spiral notebook last year.
On the other stickie note, write the NEGATIVE (bad) things about using the spiral notebook.
If you did not use a notebook, you may guess/predict at positives and negatives.

Purpose of the Interactive Student Notebook
Your notebook will enable you to be a creative, independent thinker.
You will use both sides of your brain - the creative side and the logical side.
You will be more organized.

What is the RIGHT SIDE
for?
Notebook Set Up - RIGHT SIDE The RIGHT SIDE of your notebook is for all
information gained in class or given to you by the teacher. This could include notes from class activities, notes from readings, lecture notes, or handouts with information.
Generally, this side has the factual information.
All material on the RIGHT SIDE is considered “testable” information.
What is the LEFT SIDE
for?
Notebook Set Up - LEFT SIDE The LEFT SIDE of your notebook is the
side where you show your opinions and use your creativity.
It is also the side where you process the information given to you on the RIGHT SIDE.
Examples of LEFT SIDE activities are drills, opinions, creative processing activities, and brainstorming activities.
Grading the Notebook Your notebook will be graded
several times a quarter with announced notebook quizzes.
You will use your notebook to take the notebook quiz.
You will turn in Extensions on the day of the notebook quiz.
Extension Activities
In order to earn an A on your notebook, you must complete Extension Activities to extend your knowledge of the curriculum.
Extension Activities will be done on LOOSELEAF PAPER.
Extension Activities You must complete 2 Extension
Activities and turn in on the date of the notebook quiz.
You may do up to 4 additional Extension Activities for EXTRA CREDIT!

Cover The cover of your interactive
notebook can be decorated to reflect YOUR personality.
Decorations should be neat. No offensive pictures or words!

Inside Front Cover
Your notebook directions sheet will be glued inside the front cover.
This will enable you to remember the notebook requirements at all times.

Glue your notebook directions sheet inside the front cover OR put it in the front pocket.
You MAY need to trim the top/bottom and side margins.
Inside Front Cover - AFTER
First Page - Title Page The title page has the title and
your name. Write “U.S. History to 1877” neatly. Write your name and period in the
bottom right corner. If you desire, you may decorate
your title page to reflect U.S. History.

Unit Page
We will set up a unit page for each unit we study this year.
Unit pages will have the title of the unit and neat, colorful decorations to reflect the information in the unit.
Unit pages are always RIGHT sides.
First Unit – The Historical Process
Turn to the first RIGHT side after your title page.
Write The Historical Process. Decorate your unit page to reflect
the content of this unit.
Table of Contents
Every unit has a table of contents (ToC).
These can be LEFT or RIGHT sides. Turn to the next LEFT side after your
The Historical Process unit page. Title it “Table of Contents.” When new information is added to
your notebook, update your ToC.

page 1. Turn to the next LEFT side and
number page 2. Continue to number pages until page
10.
