Advice for riding on-road
● You must follow the Highway Code.
● Be aware of what is happening around you at all times.
● If riding with children, ride behind them and slightly further out away from the kerb – this will ensure that cars overtaking will not drive too close to them.
● Use clear signals so other road users know exactly what you are doing.
● On dull days or at night ensure you can be seen – use your lights, and dress appropriately.
● Consider the weather conditions. Just like driving, different riding skills will be needed.
Advice for riding off-road
● There are many off-road areas classified for use by cyclists. Some of these areas may also be designated for use by pedestrians and horse riders such as public and permissive bridleways.
● If there is a marked path for cyclists; please keep to that path.
● Be prepared to give way or slow down for others, particularly near bends, and gateways etc.
● Be aware of the needs of others, especially those with more limited mobility; such as the mobility impaired, very young children and infirm or elderly people.

Middlesbrough Council’s Highways and Transportation Department manage the Public Rights of Way in Middlesbrough. Their aim is to ensure that all Rights of Way are legally defined, properly maintained and well publicised.
Public Rights of Way include public footpaths and public bridleways. There are 40km of Rights of Way within the Borough, consisting of 34km of footpaths and 6km of bridleways. There are also more than 100km of unrecorded public Rights of Way which provide a connected network of walking and cycling routes.
The Public Rights of Way network provides a wide range of routes and opportunities for countryside recreation and commuting to school and work. They can offer vital links between countryside sites and urban areas, create local circular routes and often form part of longer distance routes such as the Teesdale Way, 8 Bridges Way and the National Cycle Network.
All of Middlesbrough’s Public Rights of Way can be found on ordnance Survey (OS) Explorer Maps 306 and OL26, or on OS Landranger Map 93.

Physical activity is good for you! It helps you feel better by releasing a hormone called endorphin (A feel good hormone in the body). There are many other reasons to travel actively, such as:
● Adults are recommended to complete two and a half hours of moderate activity per week, and children to complete sixty minutes per day. Walking and cycling class as moderate activity, so why not incorporate this in to your commute to work?
● Burn calories and lose weight.
● Being active is good for your health – it can help to reduce the chances of stroke, Coronary Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and certain types of Cancer.
● Active travel is virtually cost free – saves you money!
● Walking and cycling are Carbon neutral activities – they don’t produce C02 or other harmful gasses.
● They don’t produce congestion, and you don’t get stuck in traffic!
● Save money on expensive gym memberships.
Reasons to Walk and Cycle
Commuting by Walking or Cycling
Training
Walking or cycling to school or work is a great way to get to your recommended activity levels. Not every journey can be realistically completed by walking and cycling, but there is always the option of parking a few minutes from your school or workplace and walking the remaining distance. This could even be parking at a car park further away than you normally do. Why not give it a go today?
Pedestrian and Cycle training is available to all Middlesbrough Primary schools. Pedestrian training is
delivered to year 3 pupils, whereas Bikeability training is delivered to pupils in years 5 and 6. Contact your school to find out more information, or contact
Middlesbrough Environment City on (01642) 243183.
Adult cycle training is occasionally delivered by Middlesbrough Cycle Centre. To find out more, please call direct on (01642) 219620.
