is so welcoming and open to new volunteers and tonew students. I have felt so welcomed in my
volunteer roles for the high school, coordinating theHS Teacher Appreciation "Souper Bowl" lunch,
assisting with class fundraising, assisting with PinkOut and the volleyball banquet, and decorating forHigh School dances. In my first year, I jumped intoauction as the Item Management Coordinator, and Ienjoyed it so much, I couldn't resist cochairing thisyear with a fabulous group of volunteers. I love
volunteering for Auction and getting to know parentsfrom all grade levels.
Mary Angle
I'm honored to be recognized as "Volunteer of theMonth." I began volunteering on the first day
mydaughter, Darby, entered Mrs. Warneke's firstgrade class that was 10 years ago!

My favorite spot over the past 10 years has beenworking the auction. I tried my hand in several
committees but the silent auction has been a perfectfit for me! You know me as the "basket lady!" Thisyear I had the pleasure of being a cochair of the
auction along with Jane Nolan and Michelle Mylekoff. I have enjoyed seeing the success of the auction and
what it provides our children.
My wish is for many more successful years of growthfor POPCS and lots of wonderful and
happy school volunteers!

Blessings in the Rain...by Megan Krizan
We had a very interesting and adventurous start to ourday one cold and drizzly morning this February. Wewere on our way to school when we suddenly foundourselves sitting in the shoulder of the George BushTurnpike with a flat tire. Not fun! Surprisingly enough we were back on ourway within 30 minutes and we only had to stand in the rain for ten of those. As we were on our way again I made the statement, "Well, that wasn't sobad." My youngest immediately responded with, "What do you mean, Mom?!That was HORRIBLE!" Ah, that's my girl. She is a bright and bubbly thing, but she also has a flairfor the dramatic and a tendency to focus on the negative. Part of it is herpersonality, but I want to help her learn that how you think makes a bigdifference in how you feel. It means the difference between having aHORRIBLE morning that leads to a BAD day, or having a bit of a challengingstart that also had many hidden blessings in it. So I took that moment tomodel some optimism. First, I acknowledged how she was feeling: "Yes, baby, that was not fun, andI wish it hadn't happened." Then I moved into showing her the good thingsthat happened to us even in the challenge: "But you know what, I noticed thatGod was looking out for us today. Let's say a quick prayer to thank Him. Lord, thank you for sending us that gentleman who took the risk to drive inthe shoulder to tell us we had a problem so our tire didn't blow out. Thankyou for giving us a nice big piece of shoulder to pull on to so we were safeeven in the traffic. Thank you for sending the Tollway Authority person soquickly and with all of the tools needed to help us so fast. Thank you, Lord, for looking out for us, even in the rain." There are a few very important things to remember when doing this, so asnot to have it backfire on you. Remember, I am talking about MODELINGoptimism. It is about showing your children how you handle the difficultsituations that happen to you, NOT about telling them how to look at thebright side of something bad that has happened to them. In thosesituations, it is most important to start with lots of empathy, and little advice,or you run the risk of being insensitive and shutting down their willingness toshare. (It's like telling a stage 2 cancer patient that at least it is not stage 3. They may be thinking that, but they don't need to hear it from you. Notcool.) Hopefully, once they feel understood they will start to look for theblessings on their own, and that is much more likely to happen if you havebeen regularly modeling it for them. There will be times in your life when it is going to be really, really hard to findanything positive to model for your children. That moment came for me 2years ago when that youngest daughter of mine was in the hospital with anew diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. There were some days early on in thediagnosis that seemed like there were no blessings left to find. In thosemoments I could still show that I knew God was with us and that I would trustHim to see us through. In that moment, I was able to realize that there wasat least one blessing left after all.
The PTF Board would love your help in

So you see, it is really important forus to show our children that we canfind blessings, even when things arehard. Not only is it good for them, but it is good for our outlook, too! Myyoungest still tends to jump to theworst, but I'm hoping that over timeshe will start to step back and try tosee things from a new perspective. So even though some rain showersin life cannot be avoided, maybe shewill see that without them therewould be no rainbows (and, that inthe meantime, God has packed heran umbrella!) Curt's CornerWHAT'S GOOD ABOUT GOOD FRIDAY?
By Curt Riske,POPCS School Life Chaplain
"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance;that Christ diedfor our sins according to the Scriptures". 1 Corinthians 15:3
On April 3, the world, and especially Christians, will observe "Good Friday",which marks the dramatic culmination of God's plan to save His people fromtheir sins. Is this just another daya day off from schoolor is it really aspecial day? If indeed it is a special day, what will you and I do to celebratethis specialness? Why is it called "Good Friday" when such atrocious eventshappened on this day? Maybe the Germans are correct calling it"Karlfreitag", which means "sorrowful Friday". Some would say we shouldcall it "God's Friday". It's all of these and more.
It all started in the Garden of Eden when man disobeyed his maker, andGodthe just and the justifierpromised a savior from sin. At God's perfecttime, Jesus came to this earth with the full knowledge that His mission herewas to suffer and die for our sins. Even when His disciples tried to persuadeHim not to go to Jerusalem and when they later deserted Him, Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, remained steadfast and faithful to Hismission. On the cross, knowing that His mission was complete, He said, "Itis finished", bowed His head and released His spirit.
"Good Friday" is good because it is the basis of our faith.
"Good Friday" is good because we could not save ourselves but He loved usso much that He could not imagine losing us.
"Good Friday" is good because it is a mirror in which we can see ourselves inour sinful reality and turn to Christ on the cross as He proclaims, "Father

forgive them".
"Good Friday" is the "why" behind the celebration of Easter and our Eastervictory today and everyday.
On "Good Friday", we see in the cross, a love so amazing, so divine that itloves us even when we deny it, turn away and ignore it, take it for granted oreven despise it.
As we approach Good Friday, may we be led to realize how great theFather's love is for us, how desperately we need His love and forgivenessand to be empowered to respond, "Thousand, Thousand, Thanks shall be,Dearest Jesus unto Thee."
