The Council of Trent

The Council of Trent

* First Council of Trent was called by Pope Paul III in 1545 and met over the course of 20 year.

* It stated that good works and fulfillment of the sacraments (confession, baptism, communion, etc) were needed for salvation in addition to faith.

* It also states that priests must be 25, educated and trained.

* It banned the sale of indulgences and established punishments for breaking religious vows.

The Inquisition

What do your remember about the Inquisition and how do you think it will be used by the Catholic church this time?

The Inquisition

* The church used the Inquisition as a way to enforce its reforms.

* Suspects were questioned, tortured and sometimes put to death.

* Primary victims of the Inquisition were Protestant living in Catholic lands along with Jews and Muslims.

* They created the Index of Forbidden books - books written by Protestant authors, which were banned by the church.
