Air Barrier

Air barrier- or known as house wrap is put up to help protect the inside of the building from outside elements before the siding is installed- Allows minimal water vapor into the house before the siding is put up

Attic VentilationSoffit vent

Soffit vent- a soffit vent is an opening under the eave of a roof that allows air to flow into the attic or space below the roof

Attic Ventilation

Ridge Vent

Ridge vent- a ridge vent is an open assembly the length of the roof at allows air to circulate in and out of the roof

Attic Ventilation

Roof Turbine

Roof turbine- roof turbines spin when a breeze blows which pulls the attic air outside

Backhoe

A backhoe is a piece of equipment the helps move dirt, gravel, and any other material on your jobsite from one place to another.

Width- 5 feet

Brick Arch

This brick arch is segmental.

Brick ArchThis brick arch is Roman because if continued would make a circle and not an elliptical.

Brick Arch with a keystone

Running BondThe running bond is made entirely of stretchers

Common Bond

A common bond has a row of headers on every 6th row of stretchers

Brick SizesModular Brick 3-5/8” x 2-1/2” x 7-5/8”

Brick SizesNorman Brick3-5/8” x 2-1/4” x 11-5/8”

Bulldozer

Bulldozer- a tracked tractor with a plate on the front to push large quantities of soil, gravel, rubble

Brick clad Structure

EIFS Clad structure

Stone Clad StructureThe stone structure is a running bondAnd the stone is coursed rubble

Wood Board Clad Structure

Wood Shingle Clad Structure

I believe these are wood shakes because of the relatively unsmooth surface

Wood shingles- shingles are sawn from wood blocks and have a relatively smooth surface.Wood shakes- shakes are split from wood blocks. They are less uniform in thickness

Code Requirements:Egress Window

Height- 25 in.Width- 30 in. Area- 750 sq. in. Or 5.2 sq. ft. Sill height- 27 in.

The IBC requirement call for 5.7 sq. ft. and a minimum height being no less than 24 in. and the minimum width being no less than 20 in. The sill height can be no more than 44 in. Our window doesn’t meet the net area for square feet.

Code Requirements:Stair Tread and Riser

Riser- 6 in.Tread- 11in.

Code requires a 10 in. minimum tread depth and a 7-3/4 maximum riser height

These stairs meet code because they fall above and below the required tread and riser

Concrete Control Joints

Control joint- an intentional dis-continuity of a component to allow cracking there instead of everywhere else in the structure

CMU

Three courses of brick equal the height of one CMU block

CMU- a block of hardened concrete designed to be laid in the same manner as a brick or a stone. Typical dimensions of CMU are 8 x 8 x 16

Decorative CMU:Split block

Sidelights

A transom is a small window directly above the door

A sidelight is a tall narrow window alongside a door

Electrical componentsUnderground transformer- transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through its coils

Electrical ComponentsMeter

Service Head

Measures the amount of electrical energy going into the building

The spot where the wires first enter the house and then to the meter

Electrical Components

Duplex Receptacle

Allows the electricity to be transferred to appliances in the room

Front end loaderA front end loader is primary used for loading material onto another type of machinery. It differs from a bulldozer because it can lift and load material whereas the bulldozer can only push. It differs from a back hoe which is mainly used for digging and not just moving

Heat Pump and CompressorHeat pump-Disadvantage-inability to operate at low temperaturesAdvantage- they pay their own way

Compressor- the main focus of a compressor is to pressurize and transport liquid

InsulationRigid Board Insulation

The purpose of insulation is to insulate the air inside the building from the outside and vice-versa. It helps keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter

Lintel

Used to support the weight of the structure over a window or opening that isn't as strong as the rest of it

Mortar JointsRaked Joint

Mortar is 3/8 in thick. It is used on a wall around a garden areaMortar type- N

Mortar JointConcave Joint

Mortar width 3/8 in.Used on a columnEither M or S type because of the amount of load on the column

Oriented Strand BoardOSB- no veneered panel product formed by layering strands of wood in specific orientation. The wooden strips are compressed and bonded with wax or resin adhesieves

Plumbing

Lavatory

Diameter 1-1/2 ‘’

Plumbing

Water Closet

Piping is 3’’ diameter.

PlumbingPlumbing roof vent

The VTR allows for relief of sewer gasses into the outside air

Plumbing

This sink is a drop in mount

Rebar

Rebar is # 8. 1’’ in diameter. The deformations help make it rigid and stronger

Steep Roof Draining

Gutter Downspout

Gutter- a gutter is used to transfer water from the roof to the downspout

Downspout- a downspout transfers the water from the gutter down to the ground off the splash blockSplash block- underneath the downspout to help displace the water and help erosion

Galvanized steel was used

Steep Roof Terms

Ridge

Steep Roof Terms

Valley

Valley- a valley is the part of the roof where to faces meet and the valley funnels the water down to the gutter

Steep Roof TermsEave

The edge of the roof. The end of the eave usually sticks beyond the edge of the building

Steep Roof TermsRake

Rake- the slope of the roof at the end of the gable

Steep Roof TermsSoffit

Soffit- under part of the roof that sticks out over the side of the wall. Sometimes has a vent as well

Steep Roof TermsFascia

The side of the over hang of the roof

Steep Roof TermsBuilding without Fascia

A building without a fascia doesn’t have an over hang over the side of the building

Stone

Coursed ashlar

StoneCoursed Rubble

Vapor Retarder

A vapor retarder is used like a weather barrier in that its purpose it to keep vapor from entering the building outside of the insulation

Weep HoleA weep hole is used to let water escape from in betweeen the brick and the building when it enters through the mortar

Welded Wire FabricThe grid was 8’x 8’
