Retail therapy
With one of the hottest fashion and luxury shopping scenes in Canada, Vancouver is known for
its opulent designers and high-end brands. Take time to indulge in what locals already know: this city was born to shop.
Luxury shoppingVancouver’s growing fashion scene includes retailers that keep their shelves stocked with the latest and greatest designs from local and international brands. And nowhere is that more apparent than in one of the city’s many high-end shopping malls, including Pacific Centre and Sinclair Centre in the heart of the downtown core.
Canada’s own luxury department store, Holt Renfrew, is also located downtown. Or ride the Canada Line SkyTrain to Vancouver’s first-ever shopping centre, Oakridge Centre, and further south to Richmond Centre. Speaking of rapid transit, the Millenium Line will take you directly to B.C.’s largest mall, Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby.
With so many exciting retailers and destination shopping spots, it’s easy to see why Vancouver’s shopping scene is smoking hot. International brands like Chanel, Gucci, Coach and Louis Vuitton can be found in neighbourhoods like Yaletown, Gastown and Alberni Street. Take your turn in one of these great retailers’ dressing rooms and join Vancouver’s many fashionistas.
south GranvilleLooking for a unique piece of art, furnishings for your home or the perfect little black dress? Trendy South Granville Street is lined with retailers and galleries that will draw out your inner art critic, interior designer and fashionista. Located minutes from downtown Vancouver, this is one neighbourhood that should be on every shopper’s itinerary. southgranville.org (Map 2, C5) Image: Vij’s Restaurant
Kerrisdale & OakridgeHome to Oakridge Centre mall, Kerrisdale combines great shopping with fascinating history. Admire the pre- and post-war architecture as you wind through charming neighbourhoods filled with big-brand retailers and mom-and-pop shops. kerrisdalevillage.com

Robson streetThis blocks-long shopping street is perfect for catching Vancouver’s vibrant sights and sounds. Big-brand retailers live among cafés and street-side food vendors. The ultimate place to find fun fashion, walking Robson is almost akin to walking a runway. In winter, Robson Square gets iced for outdoor skating fun! robsonstreet.ca (Map 1, E4-10) Image: Shaundd
West endVancouver’s vibrant West End (including Denman Street and Davie Village) includes stellar restaurants, fabulous shopping and great cultural events. Besides perusing clothing shops, art galleries and bookstores, you can stroll along the seawall in almost any season and admire this neighbourhood’s beauty. westendbia.com (Map 1, E1-H7)
Chinatown Vancouver boasts one of the world’s largest Chinatowns, packed with vibrant attractions (the West Han Dynasty Bell and Jimi Hendrix Shrine), events (the Chinese New Year Parade) and
culture (the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum and Archives), plus some of the most majestic architecture and finest Asian restaurants in the city. vancouver-chinatown.com (Map 1, B11-C12) Image: Philippe Giabbanelli
Did you know? From the 1970s to the 1990s the West end had the highest population density of any neighbourhood in Vancouver. this started changing in the 2000s as other downtown areas redeveloped with highrise residential towers.

Richmond & stevestonVancouver’s southern sister, Richmond, is home to an array of restaurants, malls and attractions, plus some of the best Asian food around. Steveston – a quaint fishing
village in Richmond – thrives with whale watching, fishing and shopping, plus dozens of bakeries, cafés, fish-and-chip stands and fine-dining establishments. tourismrichmond.com & steveston.bc.ca Image: Deymos Photo
Richmond is home to over 60 temples, mosques, churches and chapels, many of which stand side-by-side on No. 5 Road, called the “Highway to Heaven.”

North shore & Lower LonsdaleThe North Shore – with breathtaking mountains and stunning shorelines – is an outdoor playground interspersed with fine dining and shopping options. Its oldest neighbourhood, Lower Lonsdale,
includes a bustling pier, a public market, specialty shops and restaurants to suit every craving. A short ride from downtown Vancouver by SeaBus, the North Shore makes for a perfect day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city. vancouvernorthshore.com Image: Pavel Vakhrushev

West Vancouver & Ambleside VillageBesides the multimillion-dollar houses with million-dollar views, West Vancouver is home to Ambleside Village, located on Vancouver’s spectacular North Shore. Local merchants range from bakeries and clothing boutiques to restaurants, markets and more. But the best part may be the panoramic views of English Bay, Vancouver and Stanley Park. amblesidevillage.ca (Map 3, B1-3) Image: Lijuan Guo

Best Holiday Lights> Dozens of decorated boats illuminate Vancouver’s shoreline
during the annual Carol Ships Parade of Lights. carolships.org> Six stately elms drip with over 15,000 lights at English Bay –
just one example of a public space that exudes the holiday spirit. vancouver.ca/parks Photo: Laura Bartlett
> The Christmas display at Jubilee Fountain in Lost Lagoon has been an annual tradition since 1936. A second seasonal Stanley Park staple is the Bright Nights Christmas Train, which has been chugging merrily through the forest since 1980. vancouver.ca/parks
> See over a million coloured lights (including a “symphony of dancing lights” on Livingstone Lake) at VanDusen Garden’s Festival of Lights. vandusengarden.org
> Canyon Lights is, perhaps, one of the most breathtaking events of winter, with thousands of lights draping Capilano Suspension Bridge. capbridge.com

> Capilano Suspension Bridge: The Treetops Adventure tour lets you walk along a series of elevated suspension bridges for a “squirrel’s-eye view” of the forest. capbridge.com Photo: Julie DeGuia
super sledding spots> Mount Seymour: Slide down the hill in a specially
designed tube at the Enquist SnowTube Park and enjoy an easy ride back up via the tube tow. mountseymour.com

Winter Wonderland
Ice skating Does it ever get cold enough to skate in Vancouver? It does at the top of Grouse Mountain! Just a 15-minute drive from downtown, the ski resort features a pristine outdoor rink perfect for gliding day and night. The city also boasts several indoor facilities
the whole family can enjoy, with lessons for skaters of every level. Be sure to check out the Richmond Oval, a former Olympic facility. vancouverparks.ca & richmondoval.ca Image: Chung Chow
tubing What’s better (and faster!) than tobogganing? Tubing! With no special skills required, you, too, can slide down a snow-covered mountain run on an air-filled inner tube. Just be sure to hold on tight – these tubes go down the hill super fast. Visit Grouse, Cypress and Seymour mountains to discover this thrilling experience. Image: Tammy Kay Photo
snowshoeing This cool outdoor activity is a staple at most ski hills, including Cypress, Grouse and Seymour. Suspended above deep-packed snow, the webbed design of lightweight snowshoes lets you discover parts of the forest you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Rentals and guided tours are available at all three ski hills. Image: Paul Yates

say spa
soothing spa trends Nearly every one of Vancouver’s neighbourhoods features spas and studios catering to clients with every kind of need. Eco-friendly spas in Kitsilano offer good-for-you services that take Mother Nature into account, too, while a booming yoga scene will help you downward dog your way to wellbeing. If you’re prepping for a big night out, Yaletown’s specialty beauty shops provide niche treatments like lash extensions, brow threading and body waxing. In Fairview, False Creek and Kerrisdale, state-of-the-art medical spas take self-care to the next level, with the latest, greatest anti-aging treatments. Image: Anne Omelchenko
Vancouver is a spa hot spot, serving up a
range of treatments that will leave you feeling rested,
relaxed and rejuvenated.
CHI, The Spa at Shangri-La draws inspiration from the origins of the Shangri-La
legend, a place of personal peace, enchantment and
well-being.

Heavenly Hotel spasVirtually every Vancouver hotel has an on-site spa. The elegant Chi spa at the Shangri-La combines massage and hydrotherapy with relaxation and meditation to assist the body’s natural renewal. Try the West Coast Wave Massage, with deep-flowing movements and customized pressure tailored to your needs. And despite drawing Hollywood celebrities, Absolute Spa – at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, downtown’s Century-Plaza Hotel and River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond – gives every guest the star treatment (its Pink Grapefruit Jet Lag Recovery wrap makes a particularly soothing treat for tired travellers). Fresh & LocalSurrounded by lush agricultural lands and seafood-rich waters, fresh cuisine is a huge selling point in Vancouver. The 100-Mile Diet and Ocean Wise program were both born in B.C., as was Green Table – a network of sustainable restaurants that pledge to reduce their environmental footprint by serving local foods, creating less waste, reducing water usage and supporting likeminded suppliers. Image: Neil Walton Photography
eats & Ales Fine dining aside, Vancouver’s got many restaurants, lounges and pubs perfect for grabbing a casual bite with friends. Mahony & Sons Public House is about everything Irish, while Moose’s Down Under, also downtown, serves up classic pub fare – with a few Aussie dishes mixed in for good measure. Sample a rotating menu of seasonal (and local)
brews at Steamworks in Gastown, or choose from a great selection of signature ales at the city’s oldest brewpub, the Yaletown Brewing Company. Image: Chameleons Eye

he Dockside Restaurant offers superbly prepared classic dishes in a setting
like no other. Located on the waterfront where Granville Island faces the
city, guests can enjoy panoramic views across False Creek to the world-
famous cityscape of Yaletown and beyond to the mountains of the North Shore.
The open dining room is relaxed yet refined, wrapped in spectacular floor-
to-ceiling windows, while the lounge offers warm intimate surroundings for
evening cocktails. The award-winning patio catches sunlight from morning to
late afternoon. Protected on three sides, it’s an oasis of calm, disturbed only
by the occasional sound of boats making their way along
False Creek. Recent renovations have added fireplaces
and casual seating areas to this Vancouver destination.
These three venues offer seating options that are perfect
for groups from 4 to 200. With signature elements like
a 50-foot aquarium and an open kitchen, each meal is an
experience for all the senses. 2

ARKET by Jean-Georges is a destination for those who value
simple elegance and contemporary dining. Emphasizing comfort
and creativity, the menu features Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s
“greatest hits;” reinventing classic dishes by infusing eclectic flair. Guests are
able to try new flavor combinations and explore spices from other regions,
all while remaining close to home.
Starting in Hong Kong’s fresh foods markets and rising through restaurant
ranks, Chef de Cuisine Montgomery Lau has worked with some of the city’s
best chefs and contended for Canada’s Chef of the Year at the National Chefs’
Conference. His love for international flavours combined with his passion for
local produce led him to MARKET, where the focus is on seasonal, regional
ingredients with an emphasis on fresh, local fare.
MARKET is located in downtown Vancouver with four
distinct venues: a heated, covered outdoor terrace with
city views; a private dining area for groups up to 40; an
enticing bar; and a modern dining room featuring two pri-
vate rooms, one for 10 and the other for up to 16.

HOTEL DOORMAN / BELLMAN: $1 - $2. Canada’s “loonies” and “toonies” are ideal for this.
HOTEL ROOM ATTENDANTS: $2 per day if your stay is over two days. Leave the tip in an envelope in your room each day.
RESTAURANT SERVER: 15% to 20% of the bill (before taxes) for good food and service. Some restaurants add up to 20% for large parties.

> Granville Street: Home to some of the busiest nightclubs in the city, this downtown street is closed to vehicle traffic on weekend evenings, making it a great spot to step out and see the sights.
> Yaletown: Vancouver’s hippest lounges can be found in this ultra-cool community. Comb the cobblestone streets for cool cocktails and late-night networking.
> Gastown: This district set the tone for Vancouver’s vibe many years ago. Today it’s a draw for college kids, hipsters and 30-somethings alike, featuring cutting-edge cuisine and intimate whisky bars.
