●The birth of "Tokyo"With the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Edo castle became Tokyo castle and Edo was renamed Tokyo. The permanent exhibition shows the city of Tokyo, from the reconstruction of the Imperial capital following the Great Kanto Earth-quake, through the postwar reconstruction after the Great Tokyo Air Raid, right up until the 2000s.
It first opened its doors on March 28, 1993, as a museum for looking back on the history and culture of Edo-Tokyo and thinking about the future of Tokyo. In a unique build-ing modeled on a raised-floor-style storehouse, the permanent exhibi-tion shows 400 years of history and life culture, from the Edo period to the present day, using replicas and variety of authentic items.
●The common-people culture of "Edo"The entertainment districts bustled with street performers and frequent theater performances, making Edo a center for fashion and culture. This was supported by the common people and developed into the sophisticated culture of Edo. In Front of the
Nakamura-za Theater
●What is "Edo"?"Edo" is the former name of Tokyo, and for over 400 years after Tokugawa Ieyasu locat-ed the shogunate in Edo, it developed as the political center of Japan. In the beginning of the 18th century, Edo became one of the world's leading cities, with an estimated population of 1 million, and in the latter half of the 18th century, its own unique culture also blossomed and Edo became the capital of the world in both name and reality.
