Third Grade Newsletter

Curriculum News What are we learning this month? MathDuring the month of May, students are learning to calculate elapsed time using time lines to demonstrate their thinking. They are also learning about basic metric units of measurement for liquid volume and mass. Then they are solving word problems involving all of these measurement topics. Toward the end of the month students will identify the attributes of quadrilaterals. Students will ask and answer questions when hearing and reading informational texts including autobiographies, biographies, and other nonfiction. Small group work will focus on questions and identifying the main idea in nonfiction and each student will read one-on-one with his or her teacher to check fluency and comprehension. WritingStudents are publishing their environmental issue opinion essays and getting ready to publish the essays in 6 short newsletters in each class. Each newsletter group also chose one of the member’s informative paragraphs about the environment to open the newsletter. Our website has a link for the Live Binder students used for their research.Social StudiesStudents have learned about limited resources and how that affects production. They will then learn about the production process and how that has been affected by specialization.

ScienceIn science, students continue to explore life sciences including how natural resources meet our needs, the flow of matter and energy related to recycling and decomposition, and the effects of technology on the environment.
