Welcome to the North Shore
The North Shore is more than just a spectacular backdrop for one of the world’s most scenic cities. It’s teeming with life, wild and urban, and the possibilities of what to do with your time here are plenty.
Home to many summer and winter activities, including the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the mountains of the North Shore are an all-season playground, and add breathtaking vistas to the views in Canada’s most scenic community. Alpine trails and ski runs are just some of the places to meet locals and visitors.
If you’re a water lover, just head downhill and you’ll hit the ocean. The coves and islands on the coastline make for perfect paddling trips and some of the best diving in the world. All that vibrant Coast Mountain rainforest makes North and West Vancouver’s trails a mecca for all levels of hikers and mountain bikers alike.
After exploring the outdoors, indulge in the experiences off ered by our many diverse businesses. The North Shore has many unique restaurants, shopping areas, attractions and accommodation providers to choose from. The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is proud to promote our many member businesses and invites you to browse our business directory at www.nvchamber.ca or visit one of our Visitor Centres at Lonsdale Quay Market or 102-124 West First Street.

Mountain BikingThe North Shore has a well-deserved reputation for world-class mountain bike riding. The steep slopes are woven with trails that off er everything from easy cross-country to extreme downhill. Some of these trails contain numerous natural challenges like fallen logs, giant boulders to drop off , ravines to jump across, etc.
Natural old-growth red cedar planks are used to create obstacles like bridges, ladders, and teeter-totters to ride on. One of the most popular of these trails is CBC. Old Buck, Mushroom and Bridal Path trails are excellent routes for intermediate riders.
If you’re seeking a challenge, it’s best to check in with any of the North Shore’s bike shops.
Pick up a trail map and chat with staff about what kind of trail you’re looking to ride. Novice riders will love the paved, 10-kilometre, vehicle-free Seymour Valley Trailway through the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve.

British Columbia is bear country, and the North Shore mountains are prime black bear habitat.
There are a few easy rules to remember to keep yourself and the bear safe if you do cross paths. You should never feed a bear, but leaving food garbage lying around can do just that. Hike in groups if possible and make some noise by attaching bear bells to your pack — bears will avoid you if they know you’re coming.
If you run into a bear, stay calm and back away, speaking to the bear in a low voice. If the bear approaches you, don’t run and don’t play dead. Stand your ground and speak fi rmly. If you have pepper spray, this is the time to reach for it.
Report bear sightings to 604-990-2327 (BEAR).
■ Know your route. Make sure your hiking or biking trail is right for your ability. Darkness falls quickly in the woods, so allow for extra time for your return.
■ Never hike or bike alone. Let another person know (or leave a note on your car’s dash) where you’re going and when you should be back.
■ Plan for problems. Bring sturdy shoes, a waterproof jacket and always carry water. The weather can change quickly. A smart hiker also carries a light, a whistle, matches, a knife, some extra clothes, food and a fi rst aid kit. A small pack can prevent big problems.
■ Bring a cellphone. If you do get into trouble, a cellphone is a huge help for rescuers.

AccessibilityFor people with limited mobility, getting around in a new location can be a big concern. Visitors who use wheelchairs or walking aids are able to enjoy the natural attractions of the North Shore.
All buses throughout the Lower Mainland feature ramps and designated wheelchair-seating areas. Schedules can be found at www.translink.ca.
Disabled visitors shouldn’t be shy about heading up to the mountains either, as Seymour, Cypress and Grouse mountains are all equipped with ramps, accessible trails and washrooms. The mountains’ restaurant facilities provide wheelchair accessible table heights.
Over in West Vancouver, the Seawall and John Lawson Park have ramps and wheelchair-accessible washrooms with automatic door openers.
All community centres on the North Shore are wheelchair accessible, and those with pools are all equipped with lifts.

North Shore Visitors’ Guide www.vancouversnorthshore.com 604-987-4488 15
The North Shore is made up of several communities, each with its own small-town spirit, civic pride and unique characteristics. See the map on the centrefold to locate these main-street marketplaces.
Deep Cove One trip to Deep Cove and you’ll want to go back. A drive down Gallant Avenue gives way to the sheltered, calm harbour vista that is the area’s signature view. You can paddle out of the cove and into Indian Arm, or simply sit on the beach and gaze.
Deep Cove is largely residential, but its commercial core is the two-block stretch of Gallant Avenue, where galleries and a local theatre vie for attention alongside unique boutiques and quaint bistros. A little west of the cove itself, evidence of waterfront industry can be seen from Cates Park, which has both a beach and a heavily wooded trail.
Lynn Valley Tucked between mountains in North Vancouver, Lynn Valley is a lush, pretty neighbourhood
bordered by forest. Lynn Canyon Park is home to a spectacular rainforest and off ers a range of trails, a free suspension bridge that hangs high above Lynn Creek and an ecology centre.
Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, connected to the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, has fi shing at peaceful Rice Lake and trails that link up with this section of the North Shore spiderweb of walkways called the Baden Powell trail. Make sure you include a visit to Lynn Valley Village. Anchored by the beautiful new public library, this pedestrian-only village has a diverse selection of shops and services.
It is also home to the popular Live in Lynn Valley summer concert series and numerous community events.
Lonsdale North Vancouver’s past and present meet up on Lonsdale Avenue. At the foot of this busy street you’ll fi nd shipbuilding and where the working tugboats live.
The Pier is a unique venue located on the city’s historic Versatile Shipyards site. Anchored by the 700-foot long Burrard Dry DockPier and smaller fl oating St. Roch Dock, the Pier off ers spectacular 360-degree views of the North Shore and Vancouver skylines.
Lower Lonsdale is North Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and is rich in history. Walk up Lonsdale and you’ll fi nd a 29 block steep avenue lined with shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs that truly capture the unique spirit of the city. Not feeling like a vertical walk? Take the 229 or 230 bus to the top and walk down. The area has two hotels, both with views of the working harbour and extends
four blocks up and two blocks east and west, but its heart is at Lonsdale Quay. See page 6 for more information. Walk along the pathway to the west and you’ll fi nd Waterfront Park.
For those interested in the arts, the Presentation House Arts Centre on Chesterfi eld Avenue is an art gallery, a museum, a playhouse and one of Lower Lonsdale’s best-kept secrets.
Park & Tilford Just north of Main Street in North Vancouver is Park & Tilford Shopping Mall and Gardens. This public garden contains eight themed areas on 2.8 acres of land. Bridges, hanging baskets and a Japanese garden make this one of North Vancouver’s most tranquil corners. Admission is free. Adjacent to the mall is North Shore Film Studios where fi lming takes place for TV and movies.
Edgemont Village Here’s a spot that invites you to park your car and wander. The pretty village of Edgemont is only a few blocks long, but its relaxed ambience lures visitors from all over the North Shore. Its cosy coff ee shops and restaurants beckon you to sit down and enjoy a freshly made piece of pie or a warm cinnamon bun.

During July and August, you can catch the Summer Live concert series on Friday evenings. Even if you have only a few minutes before a visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, the Capilano Salmon Hatchery or after huffi ng and puffi ng up the Grouse Grind, Edgemont Village is worth a quick visit.
Ambleside One of West Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods, Ambleside has many pleasures and its long strip of beach is ideal for family picnics, sporting activities, swimming and just plain lounging around.
Stretching between Ambleside and Dundarave is the popular Seawall, favoured by walkers and joggers. Both Ambleside and Dundarave are ideal for diners who like to look out at the water, with a variety of restaurants and patios to choose from.
At night, the Lions Gate Bridge is distinguished by its elegant strings of white lights. You might also get to see a cruise ship head out to sea.
Dundarave Nestled between the mountains and the open ocean is the lovely seaside village of Dundarave in West Vancouver. With its old-fashioned lamps, beautifully tailored boulevard and hanging fl ower baskets, it is one of the North Shore’s most picturesque communities.
Take a walk to the waterfront to fi nd a scenic beach and a playground for children. Walk out to the end of the pier, which marks the site of the original ferry boat landing once used by loggers and weekend adventurers. Enjoy the prospect of Lions Gate Bridge on your left and the ships coming into the port from your right.
Caulfeild Defying the usual English spelling guidelines, Caulfeild does indeed put its “e” before its “i.” We can blame the aberration on Sir Francis William Caulfeild, who established the community of Caulfeild Cove in 1898. Lighthouse Park is one of the community’s most appealing destinations. Its forest trails lead to enormous boulders that tumble down to the Pacifi c and off er one of West Vancouver’s most splendid views. The park also contains the Point Atkinson Lighthouse.
Horseshoe Bay Horseshoe Bay is the western bookend of the North Shore and the site of the BC Ferries terminal. But many come to Horseshoe Bay
just for the view. In addition to the ferries chugging in and out, there are boats here at Sewell’s Marina, which has been owned by the same family for three generations. Why not rent a boat yourself?
Try your hand at fi shing or just enjoy the magnifi cent
surroundings while bouncing along the waves. There’s also a nice playground for kids. One favourite activity is getting fi sh and chips or an oyster burger from one of the takeout restaurants and eating it in the park overlooking the water. Another is buying an ice cream cone and wandering along the pier.
