What we do.

Data Inclusion & Task Diversity

A diversity tasks for utilitiesThe inclusion of many formats for utilities

• Electric Transmission & Distribution• Gas Transmission & Distribution• Water & Sewer Distribution• Landbase

Poll?

• Where are you primarily working :– Electric– Gas– Water– Land management– Other…

Data Inclusion: Formats for UtilitiesDatabase & GIS formats

GE Smallworld Intergraph G/Technology ESRI Geodatabase & Schneider ArcFM AutoCAD Map 3d Enterprise (TopoBase) Bentley Electric Oracle Spatial Legacy formats:

Intergraph FRAMME VISION* (AUD) MGE

Data Inclusion: Formats for Utilities

CAD formats AutoCAD (many versions) AutoCAD Map 3D Bentley MicroStation

Others… JSON (CGI M3i ) ASCII (Oracle NMS MP ) CIM XML Other:

MultiSpeak, PLSCad (XML), CYME, GME, KML

FME for a Diversity of Tasks for Utilities• Data migration from a legacy GIS or CAD• Synchronising across GIS databases• Tying into external systems – asset management• Location Intelligence / Economic Development• CAD & GIS round trips• Connect real-time systems: DMS / OMS etc.• Data Validation• Working with Geometric Networks• Real-time GPS & Mobile

Georgia Power Overview• The largest subsidiary of Southern Company• Investor-owned, tax-paying utility • Over 8,500 employees • 2.4 million customers• Serves 155 of the

state’s 159 counties

Working with Text Files

• Converts text file and updates data in Oracle SDE database

• Parses text data into separate fields and combines data from nearby text lines

• Source data

Georgia Power

XML to SDE• Converts XML data file to SDE Oracle feature

class• Uses XML mapping document .xmp file to

parse data• Determines data that has been added,

updated, or deleted and writes appropriate changes directly to SDE

• Source data and mapping file

SDE to Email• Reads feature class from SDE Oracle database

and sends filtered records via email• Uses XML Templater to format email and HTML

Python Emailer to generate email

• Emails send out data to contacts in format they can easily update and return

Automated POI creationPaul Schneider

GeoRSS for new Issues

Ad Hoc

• ESRI Data to KMZ for display in Google Earth

• General Data Conversions

CONNECT. TRANSFORM. AUTOMATE.

Environmental Best Practices for Transmission facility projects… GIS to CAD workflow with too many handoffs

Vendor Submittal

•Submits field collected data in GIS personal geodatabase format

Environmental Specialist

•Uses ArcMap•QCs the data•Weeds out unwanted data using Object IDs of each feature class

•Loads data in to SDE

GIS Analyst

•Converts data from CAD to GIS from SDE

Mapper• Adds Env

data to the plan QA

Q&A

Poll?• Who’s using FME

Problem:Migrate from a drawing based CAD platform to the GE Smallworld GIS

Goal: Transfer CAD to GIS with minimum data loss

Looks simple, but the devil is in the custom transformer details…- Snap and clean-up- Create areas- Match text

and more…

Validate:

Check the outcome in the Smallworld GIS: Important part of

checking outcome is also checking for data in editor window in SW

Of course the same process works the other way. Atmos are able to transform Smallworld objects to AutoCAD.

But that’s a story for another day…

Crew Location

Crew History:

Crew location points gathered every 5 minutes

UTC = temps universel coordonné

• Crew Tracks: Assembles points into lines based on UTC date/time sequence

• Time stampsassign UTC start and end times

Summary• Fire Proximity Awareness– Location Intelligence– Consolidate a diverse range of datasets – Appropriate transformation to simplify the data

analysis– Output to a suitable format for presentation &
