OBJECTIVE:Use free, cloud-based application Live Binders to organize research and resources for Science Olympiad events

WHAT IS LIVE BINDERS?
IS A FREE, CLOUD-BASED APPLICATION THAT ALLOWS YOU TO ORGANIZE INFORMATION TO EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND UPDATABLE DIGITAL BINDERS THAT CAN BE PUBLICALLY SHARED OR PRIVATELY VIEWED.
WHAT IS LIVE BINDERS?In Science Olympiad, most, if not all events require the organization of large volumes of data-much of it obtained from the Internet.
Most of the event rules in any given year include parameters for the kinds and amount of resources students are allowed to bring to competition.
WHAT IS LIVE BINDERS?Live Binders may be a good way to organize research and resources for your Science Olympiad events. It can also provide a cloud-based digital format for binders that is useful in those events allowing tablets and laptops now and in the future.

CREATING A BINDER
Click the My tab shown on the left to start a blank Binder. Fill in the required information.

Determine if you want your binder to be public or private

IDENTIFYING KEY EVENT TOPICSYou should have a copy of the current year Event Rules handy. You will now identify key event topics for your event. This is usually found in ‘The Competition’ section of the event rules.
IDENTIFYING KEY EVENT TOPICSThe key event topics for the 2015 Dynamic Planet competition are:
• Seawater• Energy• Water temperature and pressure• Topographic features• Processes and features of tectonic plate motion• Reef formation• Waves• Surface currents• Coastal currents• High and low tides• Coastal features and processes• Tools of oceanography• Buoyancy

Click inside Tab 1 to rename it Seawater

Click inside Tab 2 to rename it Energy
CREATING TABS
Click the red down-pointing triangle in the Energy to access the Tab Menu. Then select Tab Color to change the color of the tab.

Click the Palette Tab

Select the color that you want from the palette or key in the desired Color Code. Then Click Apply.
CREATING SUB-TABS
Click the red down-pointing triangle in the Seawater tab to access the Tab Menu. Then select Add New Sub Tab to add a sub tab.

Key in Composition of Seawater in the Tab Box

Create a second sub-tab using the drop down menu or the horizontal tab at the top of the page.

Name the new sub-tab Density

Create a third sub-tab for Salinity

Click the Composition of Seawater sub-tab under the main Seawater Tab

Search for Seawater Composition and select a website you would like to place in the binder.

Paste the URL into the yellow box on the sub-tab page. Then Click Insert
ADDING CONTENTThe webpage is now included in the Composition of Seawater sub-tab

You may find other websites that address the topic of seawater composition.

If you try to paste the URL over a URL in an existing sub tab…
It will overwrite the existing page

Select the Insert New Tab button in the Upload File dialogue box. Name the new sub-tab Chemical Composition of Seawater
ADDING CONTENT The webpage is now included in the new Chemical Composition of Seawater sub-tab

The new sub-tab is included in the sub-tab menu of Seawater.

Now let’s practice creating tabs on our own for the remaining key event topics for Dynamic Planet
CREATING SHELVES
Live Binders allows you to create ‘shelves’ for categories of binders.
CREATING SHELVES
From your Dashboard, choose Start a Blank Shelf

Fill in the required information about your shelf. The Click Create New Shelf

Be sure to include tags that will help others find your binder

Shelf is now created

The Shelf is now created but has no binders.
CREATING SHELVES
Select a binder and Click Options. Then Click Add to Shelf
CREATING SHELVES
Identify the shelf you want to add the binder to. The Click Add.

Repeat the process for as many binders as you wish

The shelf is now displayed in My Shelves
