Using IT
to further enhance our teaching
at the University of Bahrain
Introducing myself
Dr Loykie Loïc Lominé
University of Winchester
Staff Development
Consultant UK-HEA, IBO
Workshops: last week Italy, October Dubai, January Mexico, March Singapore…
Objectives of our workshop:
We will:
1. Describe examples of innovative use of IT to enhance teaching in the context of the University of Bahrain
2. Explain how IT can be used to enhance the students’ learning experience both in theory and in practice
3. Design a new learning and teaching activity for the coming year, with an IT element, together with a framework to analyze its effectiveness
4. Discuss how your own use of IT reflects wider pedagogical beliefs and conceptions about the role of the lecturer, the role of the student and the role of technology at UoB
the role of technology the role of the student
the role of the lecturer
the role of technology the role of the student
the role of the lecturer

Structure of the session
• Warm-up activity (to stimulate our minds and brainstorm the topic)
• Terminology: some definitions
• Innovation and good practice
• Using technology to solve issues
• Using IT to enhance your teaching
• Game
• Consolidation & recap

Warm up activity
Protocol:
- Stand up
- Statement on the screen.
- You have 30 seconds to think about it (react to it: do you agree, why, why not….)
- Pair up with someone and, for 2mn, share/discuss your response.
- We then repeat this three other times / with different questions / speak with other people
Statement 1
My students seem to be
much better than me
with Information Technology (IT) tools.
Statement 2
I use IT as much as possible.
Statement 3
IT is just a toy.
Statement 4
IT is just a tool.
What have we done?
- Stimulated our minds (and bodies)
- Started thinking/talking about:
• Using IT (with our students)
• Our own ideas/attitudes about IT
6 key terms
“most commonly used” “most frequently seen”
TASK:
What are the differences between them?
(Define them, illustrate them)
SUGGESTION: work in small groups
technology-enhanced teaching
technology-enhanced learning
e-learning
m-learning
smart learning
blended learning
About the terminology:
There is not “one authoritative definition” for these terms
Definitions differ by:
• Scholars/specialists/managers
• Institution/university
• Country/culture
will you want to create your own institutional glossary?
ADVANTAGE: common framework, common terms (beneficial for all stakeholders)
But also:
“Smart learning”
• Smart phone
• Smart home
• Smart watch
-> idea of “connected-ness”
How “smart” is smart?
Applying terminology
(1) Which of the 6 terms is the most suitable for you, your colleagues, your context? Why?
(2) You can also mix/create/adapt (e.g. smart teaching)
technology-enhanced teaching
technology-enhanced learning e-learning
m-learning smart learning blended learning

Round 1
Innovation and good practice
Think of one example of how you currently use IT to enhance your teaching
5mn preparation
Prepare some notes:
- Brief description (what, why…)
- Evaluation (how do you know it works?)
- 2 key benefits (advantages)
- 1 limitation (problem, disadvantage)
20mn sharing in groups
2 limitations of what we have just done:
1. We have only shared in small groups
2. We have not used any IT tool for this
How could we remedy this?

SanaAlmansoori.blogspot.com
Please answer the question on the Blog
1. Click on “comments”
2. Add your name at the end of your post (and maybe the subject you teach?)
3. If you use an laptop/tablet, maybe type your text in a WordDoc then copy/paste into blog
Round 2
Using technology to solve issues
Using technology to solve issues
Identify an issue you face – and discuss how technology could help solve the problem.
(e.g. some students do not do the preparatory work, some students struggle to understand X, some students do not dare to ask questions in class…)
Discussion: 20mn
Sharing
Each group reports briefly on one of the issues you have discussed
Round 3
Using IT to enhance your teaching
Using IT to enhance your teaching
How can you add a new IT element to one of the courses/ activities you are doing this year?
Take time to think about it
Considering (a) the advantages, (b) possible obstacles, (c) evaluation methods.

Game
Consolidation and recap
GAME Set of 16 cards (4 cards of 4 different colours) (1 set for 2 people?....)
• Each card has a key statement.
• Discuss which one corresponds to you and your practice, and why
• You do not have to reach an agreement (at each table) but you need to justify/explain your choices
“20mn on each colour”
Notes:
1. The game was invented by Shirley Bennett, Head of L&T at University of Northampton (UK)
2. I have adapted the game (the statements)
3. There is a lot of L&T theory behind the game
Blue cards
Think of a course you teach.
Choose the blue card that best represents
your priority in teaching this course.
(Note: the blue cards do not refer to IT; the others will)
the role of technology the role of the student
the role of the lecturer
Yellow cards
Choose the card that best represents what you see as
your role in using Blackboard/Moodle.
Red cards
Choose the one that best represents
what you expect your students to do in their use of technology.
Green cards
Choose the one that best represents what you see as the role of technology in that course
LMS = Learning Management System (Blackboard, Moodle)

Recap
“Using IT to further enhance teaching at the University of Bahrain”:
- At a “micro” level
- At a “macro” level
“Thinking Time”
Review what we have done/discussed today….
- about the examples from colleagues
- about the blog postings (re-read them?)
- about the IT activity you will add to your teaching this year
- about all the issues we have discussed
Write down some notes for yourself (or an action
plan, a summary, whatever you want)
