CourseDescriptionTheemergingfieldofgameuserresearchandplayerexperienceinsighthasbecomeanimportantandnecessarypartofgamedesign.GameUserResearchdrawsonthedisciplinesofcognitivepsychology,human-computerinterfacedesign,gamedesign,communications,filmstudies,education,learningandvisualdesign.Asgamesbecomemoresophisticatedintheirvisualandinteractivedesign,featuresandculturalimpact,thestudyofhowweinteractandunderstandthembecomesanessentialaspectofourmedialiteracy.Thiscourseaddressesconcepts,principles,andmethodsofusabilityandplayabilityassessmentforgames.Theemphasiswillbeonunderstandingthehuman-playerrelatedinteractionsurroundinggameinterfaces,gameplay,mechanics,immersion,amongotherelements,andtranslatingthemintodesignrecommendations.Thisunderstandingisderivedviaseveralmethodsincludinggameheuristicsandthescientificmethodforthesocialsciences.Theclasswillalsoaddressthedevelopmentofgamesasbothaculturalandaestheticpractice.

not,andalanguageforcommunicatingwithmembersofagameteamTheclasswillbepartlecture,partdiscussion,experientiallearning,andteambasedworkshopswithdirectcollaborationwiththeCTIN484IntermediateGameDesigncourse;alargepartoftheclasswillbefocusedonproblemsolving,identifyingoptimal/poorplayerexperiences,whileexploringthereasoningbehindtheseexperiences.Principlesandconceptsofoptimalplayerexperience,enhancingplayerexperiencesaswellasanoverviewofgameuserresearchmethodswillbethemajorbasisoftheclass.Theclasswillinclude:identifyinganddescribingplayerneedsincombinationwiththegames’goals;user-centereddesign;userevaluationofinteractivemedia,andgamedesignwiththeplayerinmind.Studentsformteamsontheirown,oftwoorthreestudents,withinthefirstweeksofclass.Thosewhodonotfindtheirownpartnerswillbeassignedonebytheinstructor.Youareencouragedtolookoutsideofexistingfriendshipstofindteammateswhoseskillscounterbalanceyourown.Onweek4,studentsareresponsibleforteamingwithagamedesignteamfromtheIntermediateGameDesigncourse(CTIN484/489).Theirgameconceptswillbeavailableonlineandpresentedinclassforstudentstochoose.Agoodgradeispossiblebutnotguaranteed,andwillonlyoccurwithregular,consistentandtimelyattendance,activeparticipation,aswellasthoughtfullyandintelligentlycompletingassignmentsandontime.InstructorBio:HeatherDesurvire,President/FounderofUserBehavioristicsResearch,Inc.isoneoftheforemostspecialistsofUsabilityandPlayabilitywhosepublishedworkonusability/playabilitymethodologyhasbeenusedtosetstandardsforusabilityandgametestingnowperformedinmanygamestudiossuchasEA,DisneyandBlizzard.Asapractitioner,herclientsincludemanyofthetopgamepublishersanddesignstudiosandinteractivemediacompanies,suchasDisney,Sega,LucasArts,THQ,

LearningObjectivesTheclasscoversanoverviewofuserresearchdesign,settingupandconductingusertests,andhowtoproviderecommendationsforpositivelyaffectingthegamedesign.Studentswillbeexposedtotheindustrystandardusabilityassessmentmethods,includingHeuristicEvaluation,andtheThinkAloudlaboratorymethod.Theclassincludesguestlecturerscurrentlyinthefieldofgamedevelopmentandplayabilityresearch.Theteamcomponentoftheclassincludespartneringwithclassmates,andcollaboratingwiththeIntermediateGameDesignandDevelopmentcoursegamedesignteams(CTIN484/489).Studentsin404areexpectedtoactivelyparticipateinallcritiquesessions,givingpositiveandcriticalfeedbacktothegamespresented,aswellasstudents’assessmentexercises.Theassignmentsmainlyfocusontheteamprojectassociatedwiththeplayerresearchandreadings.TheMidtermisbasedonthereadings,andthefinalbasedonaPresentationofthetwoiterationsoftheplayerresearchperformedonthegameassociatedwiththe484course,andhowtheirresearcheffectedthegamedesign.Forthisteamcomponentofthecourse,studentswilllearntoworkingroupenvironmentswherethegoalofeachmembermayormaynotbethesame.Diplomacyandcommunicationtechniquesaretaughttoassistintheseendeavors.
