Ursuline Schools Around the World

LO: In the Year of Prayer, to think about the community of Ursuline schools across the world.

Starter – In partners discuss which countries you think these 4 Ursuline schools are in. Why do you think that?

Academy of Mount St. Ursula, New York, USA

Colegio San Ursula, Lima, Peru

St Ursula’s College, Toowooba, Australia

Challenging stereotypesYou have 5 minutes in pairs to discuss each statement and feed back to the rest of the class –

• If you were attending an Ursuline school in South Africa, how do you think it would be similar and different to our school?• If you said to somebody, “I go to school in the Bronx, New York”, how do you think they would expect you to behave?

• If you were to go to a mixed Ursuline school would you feel any different? What rules would be changed?

Challenging stereotypes• Brescia House School in South Africa is an independent

(private) school and the pupils come from multicultural backgrounds.

• The Academy of Mount Ursula school is in the Bronx, New York. It is one of the best schools in the area and pupils have to pay around $10,000 a year in tuition fees to attend the school.

• Some Ursuline schools (particularly in the USA) are mixed. One example of this is Ursuline High in Ohio. Like our school the majority of pupils go off to university and are high academic achievers.

Sometimes we have stereotypical views about

places, countries and people but often the

opposite is true
