About Happytown College

We are a small (3,500 undergrads) liberal arts college in the northeast United States. We have approximately 235 full-time faculty, and we offer 35 undergraduate majors. We also serve the community surrounding the college, providing, at a minimum, online and browsing access. Our library contains approximately 1,000,000 holdings.

Our Mission

To support and enrich the instructional, research and public service missions of the University through the stewardship of scholarly information and the delivery of information services.

The Library

Aspires to provide outstanding information resources and services that advance research and learning and… Serves as an essential information resource for the state and beyond.

Our Goal:

Our Dilemma….

The Problem We Face:

Need to get higher return on dollar Need to increase online access Need to create self-sufficiency

Remote Access for Electronic Resources

Solution 1: EZproxy

How it Works…Centralizes authentication for a particular online

resource licensed by the University.

University purchases the license and allows anyone affiliated with our system to gain access to the resources.

EZproxy runs on a machine on your network so requests for database requests come from IP address on your network.

Affiliation is determined by possession of the Happytown Network ID assigned to students, faculty and staff.

The Benefits

Further Advantages

College’s network specifications are fully compatible with the EZproxy authentication and access software:

http://www.oclc.org/ezproxy/about/default/htmAlso compatible with broad range of system

specificationsDigitization allows greater accessibility to

archived materials Democratizing access to the archive allows for

individual outside of institutions to do historical research

Some Disadvantages

What quality digital library will we use with our EZproxy

licensure?

Digital Library for the Humanities and Social Sciences

Solution 2: JSTOR

About JSTOR…JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization helping the

scholarly community take advantage of advanced technology.

JSTOR helps libraries save space by allowing them to replace their print journal collections with access to its trusted digital archive.

JSTOR offers retrieval of high-resolution PDFs of journals and pages.

JSTOR has a graduated fee model so that small institutions pay less than larger institutions.
