As a result of the record breaking generosity of the TPHS community this school year, the TP Foundation was able to fund an additional round of classroom and department requests this spring.
Each department was tasked with creating and prioritizing a wish list for supplies, software, equipment or other items that would support learning. Over $100,000 in additional funds were recently allocated to purchase items for Visual and Performing Arts, Science, World Languages, English, Social Sciences, Culinary Arts, Math, and Engineering.
Orders were placed early in April to allow for delivery and use of these items beginning this school year.
“We felt very strongly that money raised this year should be spent this year,” states Nicole Baril, Foundation Executive Director. “Because of the generosity of our donors, we were able to fund an additional round of department requests for learning materials and technology.”
Large ticket items included 18 drawing and graphics tables with interactive pens for Digital Imaging/New Media classes; multiple sewing machines for Theater; a pottery wheel for Ceramics; supplies for Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, and Design classes; equipment for Biology and Physics; additional Chromebooks and charging/storage carts for English and Social Sciences; additional books for English classes; KitchenAid mixers, food processors, blenders, as well as cooking and baking supplies for Culinary Arts; graphing and scientific calculators for the Math Department; and software, laser cutters, a plasma cam, a lathe, and saw for use by Engineering, Auto Tech and Wood Tech.
Each fall, the Foundation funds $250 grants for any teacher through its Classroom Grant
program. With the success of the 2016-17 fund drive, the dollar limit for the spring wish lists was greatly increased allowing for higher ticket items which in the past would not have been fulfilled.
“These additional items will greatly enhance teaching and learning opportunities across all departments going forward,” states Principal Rob Coppo.
In addition to providing materials for classrooms, the Foundation provides funding for programs which increase student independence and help develop leadership and social skills through PALS (Peer Assis-tance Leadership Support), FalconFest, mentoring programs, and the AVID college prep program.
If you would like to support the Foundation’s efforts, please go to the website at torreypinesfoundation.org for information on the TP Education Fund and the programs and projects it supports or to make an online tax deductible donation. An informational flyer can also be found on pages 9 and 10 of this newsletter.

The new paperless process should be easy to navigate with the all information, registration and payment online and in one place. Just head to torreypinesfoundation.org and click on “Register for Events” and then click the Grad Nite flyer to be taken to the registration page.
The cost for the all night party is $140 and registration will close on Friday, June 2nd.
Night-long activities will include an illusionist show, five hours of DJ entertainment and dancing. Each grad will receive a loaded $50 Power Card for use on any redemption or prize games and will have unlimited access to all other video games. There will also be board games, Giant Jenga and more so that lines and boredom are not an issue.
Grads will also enjoy an extensive buffet including a mac and cheese station, pizza bites, burgers, pretzel dogs, salads, fresh fruit and unlimited sodas and water. Mini cheesecakes, brownies and cookies will round out the dessert menu. To keep the grads going in the early hours, warm bagels, mini danish and muffins will be served before they head home.
If you would like to purchase a lei for the TPHS graduation ceremony for your graduate, you can do that on the website as well as part of the registration process. Leis will be delivered to the students at graduation check in on June 16 and they will sell out, so don’t delay.
Grad Nite runs from 11 PM on Friday and ends at 5 AM Saturday morning. Graduates will check in at the Torrey Pines High School gym beginning at 10 PM on Friday and will be bussed to Dave & Busters. Busses will return to TP at 5 AM Saturday.
Why Grad Nite? Studies have shown that post-graduation events like this save lives by providing a fun, cool and safe alternative to other celebrations.
High school graduation is statistically one of the most dangerous nights in young peoples’ lives. Attending a chaperoned all-night celebration keeps them safer than if they were out and about with their friends unsupervised.
WE WILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to help with check in at TPHS or to attend the event with the graduates as an all-night chaperone, please email holly.coughlin@sduhsd.net.

SUPPORT ALL STUDENTS WHEN YOU SHOP!
ATHLETIC PHYSICALS NIGHT IS JUNE 1
TPHS will hold the annual Athletic Physicals Night on Thursday, June 1st in Building B from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. ALL Torrey Pines athletes for ALL TPHS sports for the 2017-18 school year are invited to attend.
“This night is offered as a convenience to our Falcon families and is a great opportunity to obtain a low cost physical and get the necessary paperwork out of the way long before next year’s season deadlines,” states Richi Klapmeier, TPHS Athletic Trainer. “We bring in licensed medical practitioners to evaluate our athletes to make sure they can safely participate in the wide range of sports TPHS has to offer.”
For a $25 donation, students receive an athletic physical by a physician and can turn in their forms at the same time. Proceeds from the evening benefit the TPHS General Athletic Fund which supports facilities, staffing, administrative and other needs in Athletics as they arise throughout the year.
“We are still in need of both licensed medical and non-medical volunteers to help with evaluations, paperwork,
crowd control, and directing stu-dents to make the evening run effi-ciently and smoothly,” continues Klapmeier. “Physicals Night is a fast paced event and it is always fun to see so many of our great stu-dent athletes on campus.”
Anyone who is interested in helping should contact Holly Coughlin, TPHS Volunteer Coordinator, in the Foundation office at holly.coughlin@sduhsd.net or call the office at 858.755-0125 ext 2029 to sign up.
Please visit www.tphs.net PRIOR TO JUNE 1ST and click on the Athletics tab to complete online clearance and download and print the Physical Exam form. Be sure to thoroughly read over and complete all applicable sections before heading over that night and be certain ALL the forms are signed by a parent or guardian where indicated.
Bring the completed forms and $25 cash or check made out to TPHSF with you.

TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON
The TPHS Foundation hosted the annual Teacher Appreciation luncheon, with the assistance of our parent volunteers, on May 2 which was proclaimed to be National Teacher Day in our district.
Teachers and staff were transported to the Jersey Shore and were treated to a lunch of Jersey Mike’s sandwiches, chips and salads on the Administration Building back patio. There was also
an impressive and tempting dessert buffet provided by our parent volunteer bakers.
All staff was included in a raffle drawing for gift cards to area merchants as an additional thank you.
Special thanks to the parent volunteers who helped set up, serve, clean up, bake, or donated gift cards. We appreciate you, too!
