The University of Lincoln Students’ Union is driven by students’ wants and needs. All students at the University automatically become members of the Students’ Union when they enrol. The Students’ Union provides quality information and nurturing support, as well as encouraging participation. The Students’ Union is here to communicate honestly with its members so that both can look ahead with the same ideas and attitudes. The team listen, inform and direct every student, with any query. We are here to be a positive part of the students’ time.
The Students’ Union is democratically run by students, for students. Four Sabbatical Officers are elected annually to the role of President,

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE
4 | www.lincolnsu.com
JAMES BROOKS
University of Lincoln Students’ Union has experienced significant change over the last year in its drive to continuously improve and deliver the best for its members. The Union became independent from the University on the 1st of July 2012, enabling the Students’ Union to have more autonomy and control, whilst continuing to work in close partnership with the University. This move also gave us more opportunity to lobby and challenge for an enhanced Lincoln student experience.
I joined the Union in August 2012, immediately conducting a thorough review of all systems, followed by the commencement of a strategic review with all members and stakeholders to ascertain what direction they wanted the Union to go in. This enabled determination of how resources should be allocated to support this common direction.
A staffing restructure took place in March 2013, and a new Representation & Student Voice Department was created, followed by a significant recruitment drive leading to a 50% increase in the Staff team. This means that the Union is fit-for-purpose, and ‘representation’ – identified by the strategic review as the number one priority – could be
maximised. The Union nurtures the talent of University of Lincoln graduates, and is proud of the fact that over 50% of the current workforce is made up those. It also provides part-time opportunities in the Union for current students where possible.
During this period of change, the Union continued to increase participation in sports clubs and societies – an area of success and continuous growth. Revamped finance regulations and in-house finance management will enable all sports clubs and societies to have ‘live’ and accurate information on their bank accounts, empowering them to maximise their participation. The sector-leading Lincoln Award, offered by the University Careers Service and supported by the Union, enhances employment prospects with training workshops and CV support. The offering of volunteering and job opportunities continues to be a strength of the Union. A complete overhaul of the constitution and streamlining of processes/procedures will increase our impact, enabling even more participation. Significant work on a revitalised website and brand new customer relationship management system will further increase our impact and enable the Union to better communicate
with members. A complete rebrand, incorporating what students identified in the strategic review will be rolled out shortly, and this will give the Union a clear identity – something with which students can associate the Students’ Union.
We are now entering an exciting time, as we build on our success, drawing on the talents of our motivated team of sabbatical officers and staff, working in tandem with the University to build the very best Students’ Union, continuing to climb the league tables – all the while helping our students to have a successful, memorable and enjoyable time at Lincoln.
Going forward, the Union is becoming an agile, fit-for-purpose and member-led organisation and will increase its impact even further next year, and over the next three years, as it realises its goals and endeavours to meet the outlined strategic aims.

Over 1250 of our members filled out an in depth survey, a further 128 stakeholders from the University, the Union and the local community took part in a dedicated survey; we then carried our telephone interviews with a wide range of students to really find out what the issues are whilst you study at Lincoln.
Key themes form the Strategy
We have developed six Key Themes that we are going to prioritise over the next three years:
STRATEGIC REVIEW
We will provide every student with independent, unbiased support and guidance on all matters relating to their student experience whilst studying in Lincoln. We recognise the needs of our diverse membership, so all our support will be tailored to the individual.
We will work to improve the quality of support from both the University and the Union. We will give our members the tools to think about how they learn as active partners in their course. Together we will lobby the University to overcome any barriers which prevent our members from fulfilling their academic potential.
SUPPORT ACADEMIC
We will be a strong, representative Union that is easy to access. We will be useful to all our members no matter who they are, where they are from, where they study or how they study. We will be respected by the University and the local community for being the voice of students working hard to constantly improve the reputation of Lincoln and the University.
Employability is not just about getting a job. To us, employability means working in partnership to provide opportunities to our members for their self-development. Helping our members understand the skills they have and need, providing guidance on how to utilise them to achieve their personal ambitions in work and in life. Our approach will be personalised.

We want to make sure that every student feels part of the University of Lincoln experience, that they feel part of something much larger; an experience where they are supported and made to feel welcome on a friendly campus. We recognise that there is a community on campus as well as the local community of Lincoln. We will work to ensure that students value their place in Lincoln and work in partnership with the wider community to create a sense of civic pride amongst our students.
COMMUNITY
We want to make sure our members enjoy their time in Lincoln, meet new friends and feel part of a community. We will provide events that appeal to our wide range of students and provide a place where our members feel safe and welcome. We will not tolerate discrimination of any type. We want to make sure that our members can socialise in places where they feel welcome and the entertainment provided is student-led and aimed at students.

A MESSAGE FROM VP ACADEMIC AFFAIRS...
WESLEY WELLS
12 | www.lincolnsu.com
I feel very grateful for my time in the Students’ Union this year and being part of the structural changes that were made has meant that we are a stable organisation moving forward.
The job has been an interesting one; from supporting individual students as they are sat in front of disciplinary panels, to celebrating with masses of students and staff at our conference. I’m particularly proud to have been part of a team that trained hundreds of student reps this year, meeting with them regularly and embedding a culture of critical reflection in everything they did.Especially potent were times when those criticisms were aimed at us; it was inspiring to see students who wanted to help develop our systems and processes because they had identified an issue. We were responsible for creating some real University citizens this year and I’m very proud of that.
Our participation in the National Demonstration was also a highlight as it provided an opportunity for a huge number of students to have their voices heard on a National stage; for many of those that
joined us it was the first time they had taken such an active role in a political event. I feel that University is the most perfect time and environment for these actions to take place and I hope they continue their interest in politics and discussions surrounding higher education.
Finally, commemorating the staff of the University through our annual SU Awards was a particularly remarkable event for me. Throughout the year, the Students’ Union is in a privileged position to hear about the great work happening all across the campus and I had been particularly involved in those conversations. To finally be able to celebrate with the staff that students feel are working hard for them was a really nice feeling. No management information, no key performance indicators, simply hundreds of students telling us why they think that particular person is brilliant.

ELECTION
The Students’ Union elections are a democratic process in which the selection is student-led, as it should be. It is fantastic that students want to play a big part in shaping the future of the student voice at the Union and their time at the University. Students are becoming more interested in understanding the wider issues around Higher Education and the changes in policies. Students’ Union elections are by students, for students; this clear interest is truly encouraging and will mean elections can positively shape the future of the student experience.

ACHIEVEMENTS THROUGH THE
LINCOLN AWARD:
I feel the Lincoln Award has significantly improved my employability skills, as it has been able to help me identify which areas of my skills need improvements quite easily. These skills really will transfer in my search for graduate employment. For example, I wish to work in the media industry and as I am job searching, I am able to identify with advertisements which skills I possess and may be the best to drive my career forward.Jake
‘ I think the recognition of my own skills is one of the biggest things the Lincoln Award has given me. I believe the Lincoln Award will help me in my search for graduate employment as it has helped me develop my time management, with tackling studying and work experience.Ian

I feel that the Lincoln Award has helped my confidence in a way that I didn’t think I would be able to obtain in the UK. I believe that the Award has helped me gather my thoughts and made it clearer of where I want to be in the future with my career.Rachael

It has been an honour representing students throughout my year as Welfare andDiversityOfficer.Ihavereceivedso much support from students and the student’s union staff. Many of my experiences have truly changed me as an individual.
At the beginning of my year, I was approached by a group of students about the lack of a faith space at the University. With my support, students managed to persuade the University to invest in the creation of a new multi faith space. As of September 2014, Witham House, which is located opposite the sports centre, will be converted into a multi faith space. This will accommodate students who wish to conduct religious sessions or want to meditate. As VP Welfare and Diversity, this particular action made me proud of the students – and the University – as it showed they really cared for the wellbeing of students from all different backgrounds.
The Student Buddy project is another highlight of my term in office. This was created with the help of colleagues in the counselling team and Social Care department at the University. This project involved students giving one to one support to other students. All buddies were given 10 weeks training in essential counselling skills by senior lecturers. I brought this project to life by talking to the University advice team, and highlighting how some students suffered in silence.
Working with the other three sabbatical officers has been amazing, and I have made lifelong friends. Working at the students union has shown me that if you want to see change, you can go out there and do it, if you have enough drive and passion.

During a challenging economic climate, the University of Lincoln Students’ Union continues to maintain a stable outlook with a healthy cash flow and strong reserves position. This financial year up to 30th June 2013 has been one of busiestyearsfinancially for the Union, with over 15,000 transactions processed through the finance system resulting in a 28% increase on the previous year.
It was another strong year for allocating resources, with representation seeing an increase in spends by 26% and over £95,000 given out in Block Grant allocations to participation areas. To further support our Clubs and Societies the Union provided in addition to Block Grants over £15,000 of development funds. The Union continued its support of the BUCS League heavily funding transport, affiliations, facilities hire and entries. Over £50,000 was spent alone on transportation supporting this activity. Your officers also utilised an increase of 400% to the campaigns budget to run campaigns representing you!
FINANCE
It has been an exciting year for the Students’ Union Finance Department with the establishment of an internal staffing structure. This means as from the 1st July 2013 the Students’ Union has an internalised Finance Department moving it out of the Universities Finance Department and oversight.
The aim is to provide a faster reacting service to our membership, be able to further scrutinise our financial resources, to give our officers increased accountability to the membership and to set and maintain our own service standards. We have now developed operating objectives and KPI’s to support the internalisation and are working closely with departments to assist in the facilitation of the Students’ Union strategy. We look forward in developing further relationships with our external stakeholders to deliver these aims.
