A short story from September 1973In September 1973 40 years ago I began my studies at

the University of Lancaster when I participated in a math course prior to the formal start of the university. I left Iceland first alone but Elin my wife and then our only daughter Sif came later in the month entering the UK by a flight from Iceland to Glasgow. I went there to pick them up. I waited outside the customs but Elin and Sif did not come through. I asked for a permission to enter the baggage area. No one there. I went up to the second floor to the customs area. There Elin was arguing with the customs officers who were asking for a written statement that she was married to me. She had only papers that I was studying at Lancaster. In Iceland women keep their maiden name after marriage so she was Oskarsdottir in the passport and had no paper confirming our marriage. At that time there were number of cases where men in the UK brought in foreign women even marrying them temporary so they could enter the UK. Then I came upstairs my daughter (3 years old) ran from the officers under the gate to me. Then the officers declared that this was enough verification for the family connection and the gate was opened for Elin and Sif to enter UK formally.
