UNIT 4: HEREDITY

VOCABULARY

CHARACTERISTICS A distinguishing feature or quality

INHERITED Derive (a quality, characteristic, or predisposition) genetically from one’s

parents or ancestors

TRAIT A characteristic that an organism can

pass on to its offspring through its genes

OFFSPRING Children or young of a person, animal,

or plant

INNATE Existing from birth; inborn

INSTINCTIVE BEHAVIORS Behaviors animals are born knowing

how to do

LEARNED BEHAVIORS Actions and reactions that an animal

learns itself usually from its parents

RECESSIVE TRAIT A trait that reappears in the 2nd

generation after disappearing in the 1st generation when parents with different

traits are bred

DOMINANT TRAITS Occurs when one allele masks or

suppresses the expression of its partner

INBORN Inherent, (adj.) naturally present at birth
