How might we use the abandoned

Cincinnati subway to create a space

that encourages creative expression

and performance for the community?

Metro Bahn is an underground art and performance center that is dedicated to inspiring creativity in Cincinnati by repurposing the abandoned Cincinnati Subway. It’s initial inspiration for the underground art center stemmed from a desire to repurpose abandoned infrastructure in Cincinnati. While the trend of repurposing abandoned sites has gained popularity through projects such as the New York City High Line, the concept has been a major urban strategy since the early 1990s.

The rich history of Cincinnati’s subway, coupled with its ability to sustain a variety of programs, make it an attractive opportunity. Many of the existing subway stations are in surprisingly good condition due to the original construction standards of the 1920s, as well as the cities continued upkeep to support the highway above ground. Contextually, the stations also reside within the downtown neighborhoods of Cincinnati, such as OTR, making them ideal spaces for public use. With popular trends of repurposing infrastructure and successful precedence studies, the Cincinnati’s subway could be the city’s next exciting public space.

The Race Street Subway Station, is the largest of all four remaining underground stations. It is the only station that supports four individual subway trains, and the largest boarding platform. This is indicative of how the station was meant to serve as one of the central hubs for the subway line. Today it is in excellent condition, and with the surrounding site being lush in commercial, music, and performing art venues, it is an excellent location for an underground concert hall and gallery. The next step in the trends research was to study the needs of the Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine community. While a lot of research supports the development of neighborhood growth and adaptive reuse, I was curious in discovering what the community felt was missing. I conducted this survey in multiple neighborhoods around Cincinnati, focusing primarily in Over-the-Rhine near Washington Park and Music Hall.

Booth Elevation The Graffiti Lounge is Metro Bahn’s main entry space and provides programmatic support for either the Bahn Gallery or Main Stage. A stripe of red LED in the floor signifies where the original platform used to be and creates a separation of space from the bar and booths. These spaces are shaped into curved niches that are designed to resemble train cars, insinuating that guests move off the platform and into cars similar to real subway stations. The inside of the niches is littered with rotating graffiti art to give the space a dynamic urban aesthetic.

Stage SectionThe Main Stage follows similar logic to the architecture in the Graffiti Lounge. Niche like spaces that resemble train cars create the VIP booths and Stage in order to create a unique and intimate experience. Graffiti is found once again on the niche walls of the VIP booths that are complimented with rich red upholstery and brushed bronze metal detail. LED screens hang from the ceiling and around the curvature of the stage wall so that musicians, actors, and comedians can project their branding and lighting effects to maximize stage presence.

The Bahn Gallery is the third main program in Metro Bahn. The space resembles a large arcade and is designed to be flexible to accommodate different artists and events. The blue and red stucco niches on either side are rent-able zones for artists and designers to display their work to the public. Similar to the rest of Metro Bahn, these niches are in the shape of train cars and envelope the art that is displayed within. A DJ booth and separate bar are included into order to make the Bahn Gallery an independent space, so that the Graffiti Lounge and Main Stage can accommodate a separate event simultaneously with the Bahn Gallery. In addition, the gallery has its own entrance into Metro Bahn making it a completely self-sufficient program.

Biophilia is defined as an innate love for the natural world, supposed to be felt by all humankind. By utilizing this embodied psychology within the space, guests will feel happy and rejuvenated whenever they interact in their suite. Using materials like stone, water, and sand, the suite will have a multitude of sensory highlights from touch to sound. The suite assumes the role as a retreat from the exhausting culture of Las Vegas. By creating a relaxing environment the guests are rejuvenated and ready to enjoy Las Vegas to their fullest potential every night.

Connect is an innovative tourist information center, located along the Champs Elysees in Paris. It is designed to provide travelers with easily accessible information at all times in a convenient location. The center consists of a series of touch screen facade panels that allow users to access important information such as maps, currency, transit systems, and events. In addition, Connect provides users with an opportunity to share travel information in an attempt to facilitate social interaction with other travelers in Paris. This provides another form of cultural exposure to travelers interested in exploring new places with new people.

Beam Fixture

The concept behind, “Beam” was to emphasize the natural light rays, created by me and my partner’s lamp. Our lamp is a 40 watt Halogen Energy Advantage decorative candle. When we first experimented with our light we thought it had a very organic shape which lead us to choose a sphere in order to accentuate the shadows casted from the structure, as well as the light rays. The structure is made up of different size key rings with contrasting silver versus gold finish. Inside some of the key ring structures are materials with a matte finish on the outside, and a reflective finish on the inside. A second important requirement of the light was that it must incorporate food into its design. Thus, a few of the circles are tinted red in order to create a warmer reflected light on the food (we chose strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries). These are placed near the middle because that is where the most light is directed from our lamp and we hoped that the red would be reflected most. “Beam” is hung from the ceiling using fishing wire, and a spring. The spring is a critical part of our design as it creates dynamic movement when a user pulls a skewer from the orb. Finally, we used electrical clips to attach our skewers to our light fixture. The action of pulling the skewer forces the light to bob and jiggle, causing the circles to cast dancing shadows.

Omnia Las Vegas, was inspired by a combination of an old European theatre, and the inside of a luxurious jewelry box. Here guests are surrounded by luxurious materials, dramatic light shows, and some of the best DJs in the world. Omnia is comprised of three main active spaces: The main dance floor which showcases an impressive LED chandelier, Ultra Lounge sporting masculine leather booths and a smoky atmosphere, and lastly, the outdoor balcony space reminiscent of a bohemian garden retreat. My responsibilities included materials and specifications, photoshoping renderings and 2d drawings, and autocad drawings.

The CTF Towers Restaurants was a project composed of designing for a variety of different dining experiences on multiple floors of the newest Tianjin skyscraper. Dining options include a whiskey bar, all day dining restaurant, a luxury grill, and others. Each dining space has a unique

branding to give guests a fresh experience for any occasion. My responsibilities included furniture drawings, Autocad construction drawings, and managing material palettes.

Newark Airport is one of the top airports with the heaviest air traffic. In conjunction with OTG, Rockwell’s vision was to completely transform terminal C (home to airlines such as United), into a dining oasis. Travel guests now have a multitude of dining options to choose from, varying in cuisine, prep time, and atmosphere, but always delicious. My responsibilities were furniture drawings, sketch-up models, touch up photoshop for renderings, and material specifications.

San Diego’s Westfield Horton Plaza was built in the 80s, as the premiere mall for the area. Sporting the hottest brands, and traditional architectural motifs it was one of the most popular public spaces to visit. As years past, Westfield saw less and less attention being dedicated to updating and keeping the aesthetic fresh. Rockwell Group’s priority was to redefine Westfield’s identity. Outdoor spaces, with lush greenery, terraces, and subtle but luxurious material accents, reinvigorate the shopping experience, bringing the San Diego community back to Westfield’s doorstep. My responsibilities included rendering elevations and plans, procuring material samples, and detail drawings.

Aldara Hospital was the first HOK project that I worked on. My main responsibilities were Revit drawings, material palettes, and photoshop work for presentations. The project was very rewarding in its variety of materials and colors that were used throughout the different spaces. It was also an enriching experience in how culture affects the use and variety of spaces.

The last project I was involved with took place in India. It was a 14 story office space. It hosted a floor for executive employees and an entire floor dedicated to training and interviews. The main concept of the space was to use two focal masses at either end of each floor to serve as communal spaces such as conferences and huddle rooms. These masses were painted with a bright color to serve as way finding. The carpet around the perimeter of the masses reinforced the color on the masses soffit and grounded the space. My main responsibilities were Revit drawings, material palettes, elevation and plan renderings, axon drawings, and assisting on making presentations.

My internship at Livewell Collaborative provided me with a unique opportunity to work at firm that was dedicated to creating design solutions for companies such as Boeing, P&G, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. During my time at Livewell I worked on two projects, one with P&G which is currently confidential, and one project with Children’s Hospital. My project with Children’s was centered around designing an educational tool that doctors around the world could use to educate themselves on the proper procedure for hydroxyurea treatment in sickle cell patients. In the beginning, we used interviews with providers (doctors), to gain insights as to the best educational tools. We also designed a co-creation session with patients and providers to understand preferred learning tools. This lead us to design a website which would host a variety of tools, centered around patient visit times. These tools change as patient visits change, and the tools can be catered to each unique patient.
