Again, our May meeting was very well attended. Our main speaker, Mayurie Gunatilaka, took us through herschoolinginSriLankaandthenJapantouniversityinNewZealandwhereshegraduatedwithaMaster'sdegreeinscience and nuclear physics. She has worked for NWH Global as General Manager Planning and DevelopmentServices Australia andNew Zealand and is now SeniorManager Transport System Planning for the NZ TransportAgency.Hertalkwasinformativeandinspiringandgeneratedsomelivelydiscussion.

OurMini speaker needed no introduction.WallyHirsch told us of phone callswhich changed his life. As alwaysWallywasentertainingandafundofinformation.HespokeofthecallfromtheDeputyprimeMinisteraskinghimtocometoWellingtontodiscusstheroleofRaceRelationsConciliatorandtheissuesthatarosefromtherole.Hethenwentontothecallwhichledhim,viaauniversitytourguidingprogramme,tobeing,togetherwithAdele,ourownguideextraordinaire.Wally,youareowntreasure.

It ledmeto themusicofGeorgeGershwin,who integratedJazz with the symphonic form. So, I presented to the group Gershwin's history. Born in 1898 of Russian Jewishimmigrants,hedemonstratedearlyabilityonthepiano,writingandpublishinghisfirstsongin1916.Hewrotehismost famousRhapsody in Blue in 1924, an amazing piece ofmusic based on Jewishmusic, black Jazz and blues.Together we watched and listened to a wonderful presentation of Rhapsody in Blue stunningly played andconductedbyLeonardBernsteinwiththeNewYorkPhilharmonic.(GoogleYouTube:GeorgeGershwinBernstein)Wefollowed thiswithSummertime, fromGershwin'sPorgy&Bess, sung by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
