Santal is believed to be a corruption of the common Bengali name for their tribe, saotal or saotar.

Until the 19th century, Santali was an oral language.

Ghose, Arun (2010) Santali: A look into Santal Morphology, Gyan Publishing House (New Delhi)

American Baptist missionary Rev. Jeremiah Phillips came to India in 1936.A Santali Primer (1845) Sequel to A Santali Primer (1850) An Introduction to the Santal Language (1852);

From Google Books

Not equipped to represent checked consonants. Traditionally, no character to represent the glottal stop. Don’t have sufficient vowel characters to represent Santali vowels.

No Indic scripts were adequate for writing Santali—

Neither was Latin.

Pandit Raghunath Murmu began working on creating a script “Ol Chiki” specifically for Santali in the 1920s.

The work took about 20 years to complete.

In April 2008, Ol Chiki is added to the Unicode standard.
