FISHERIES
Fisheries and fishing is one of the oldest
occupation of human beings.
The importance of fisheries have increased
because of rapid growth of population of the
world.

TYPES OF FISH
About 30,000 types of fish are found in the
world.
Fish can be divided into 3 types on the
basis of fishing centers.
Deep Sea Fish
Coastal Fish
Fresh Water Fish

Deep Sea Fish- these are found in very
deep seas and are fished in small quantity.
Coastal Fish- these are fished from shallow
deep seas near the coastal area. These vary in
quality and quantity both.
Fresh Water Fish- these are found in salt
waters, in rivers and lakes and in artificial
ponds.

WORLD
Fisheries regions of the world can be
divided into 2 parts:
A) Sea Fish
B) Fresh Water Fish

THE NORTH-WEST PACIFIC FISHING
GROUNDS
These are located from Bering Sea to East China
Sea.
These are found in the eastern coasts of Russian
Federation, Japan, Korea, China, Philippines and
Vietnam.
The main types of fish of this area are Sara line,
Herring, Mineral, Salmon, Cuttlefish, Crustacean,
Cod, Tuna and Halibut.

THE NORTH-WEST ATLANTIC
FISHING GROUNDS
These fishing grounds are extended from
Newfoundland to eastern shores of New
England.
Many fish banks are found in this area. Grand
Bank is the most important fishing bank.
Most important fish are Macreal, Lobster, Rose
Fish, Shaad and Halibut.

THE NORTH –EAST ATLANTIC FISHING GROUNDS
These are extended from Iceland to Mediterranean shores along with the coasts of Europe.
This is the largest fish producing region of the world.
Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland, and Denmark come under this region.

The entire region is divided into 12

2.Norway and Lofoten Islands.
3. Baltic Sea
4. White Sea
5. Irish Sea
6.North Ireland and Western Scotland
7.North Scotland and surrounding islands

THE NORTH-EAST PACIFIC
GROUNDS
This area is situated in Pacific Coast and is
extended from Alaska to California.
The areas included in it are western coasts of
U.S.A. and Canada.
Cold climate of this region is responsible for the
large stores of fish in this area.
Major types of fish caught in this area are
Salmon, Herring, Crab and Oyster.

SOUTH- AMERICAN PACIFIC
COASTAL FISHING GROUNDS
Peru is the 2nd largest fish producing country
in the world.
Chile is also developing fast in this field.

NORTH AMERICAN GULF COASTAL FISHING GROUNDS
These extend from coasts of Texas to the coasts of North Carolina states of the U.S.A.
This area belongs to warm water current namely Gulf Stream.
Head fish, Mullet and Shrimp are the main types of fish produced.

The fishing grounds of India are extended along the coast of Indian Ocean.
The fishing centers of India are divided into two parts:
A) Along the coasts of Arabian Sea( Maharashtra, Gujarat, Coast of Malabar)
B) Along the coasts of Bay of Bengal (West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gulf of Mannar)

Fresh water fish are found in rivers,
canals, ponds, lakes and cold water
reservoir.

The main fish exporting countries of the
world are Japan, Norway, Peru , Canada
and Newfoundland.
The main fish importing countries are
U.S.A., Great Britain, Germany and France.

CONSERVATION OF FISHERIES
Find out the areas of fish and try to estimate the total quantity of fish available there.
Fishing should be done under the supervision of skilled fishermen.
Scientific and technical methods should be employed.
The quantity of fishing should be fixed.
Ecological balance of fishing grounds should be maintained.
The water of fishing areas should not be allowed to pollute.
