Steve Wheeler’s challenge on Twitter recently:

The #twistedpair challenge asks you to put together an unlikely pairing of characters - historical, contemporary or fictional - and write about a connection they have (however tenuous) and how it relates to learning or teaching.

What conversation might Tarzan have had with Jean Piaget?

Could Madonna have been BFF with Einstein?

What’s the point?

A mashup of 2 seemingly unrelated characters is:

fun!

challenging! (lateral thinking)

Edward de Bono is a Maltese physician, psychologist, author, inventor and consultant. He originated the term lateral thinking, wrote the book Six Thinking Hats and is a proponent of the teaching of thinking as a subject in schools. Wikipedia

creative!

For example, Sisyphus and Wile E. Coyote (Colin Warren #twistedpair)

These two characters are in a perpetual struggle - they both have goals and in attempting to achieve them, continue to be frustrated.

As teachers we need to support the development of resilience in our students and encourage them to persevere.

Spiderman and Paolo Freire (Vanessa Camilleri #twistedpair)

“Not everyone is meant to make a difference. But for me, the choice to lead an ordinary life is no longer an option.” -Spiderman

Freire wanted to bring education to the poor by empowering them with critical thought through literacy.

We need to follow in steps of our superheroes to be able to bring about a change in the world we live in.

Paulo Reglus Neves Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate of critical pedagogy. Wikipedia

John Dewey and Jedi Master Yoda (Helen J. DeWaard #twistedpair)

Both Dewey and Yoda would see the transition and transformation of teaching and learning as a continuum.

Over to you!
